Job summary

The Municipality of Souris-Glenwood is seeking an Operator-in-Training to start a career in municipal water and wastewater operations. You will learn under certified operators, with training and certification progression funded by the Municipality.

This trainee role offers hands-on learning across water treatment, distribution, and wastewater systems, with a supported certification pathway and wage progression based on milestones.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License.
  • Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Dependable, safety-conscious, and able to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks as required.
  • Good communication, basic computer, and record keeping skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist certified operators with daily water and wastewater operations.
  • Learn sampling, testing, monitoring, inspection, and record keeping procedures.
  • Assist with maintenance and repairs of utility facilities, water distribution infrastructure, and wastewater collection infrastructure.
  • Participate in training, mentoring, and certification activities as assigned.
  • Assist with service calls, utility emergencies, alarms, and routine inspections under supervision and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Operate tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery as training and qualifications allow.
  • Follow safe work procedures, workplace health and safety requirements, and applicable municipal policies.
  • Participate in standby, after-hours call-outs, or emergency response duties as training, certification, and operational requirements allow.
  • Perform other Public Works and utility-related duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Summary

The Municipality of Souris-Glenwood is seeking a motivated individual interested in building a career in municipal water and wastewater operations.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision and direction of certified operators while learning the operation and maintenance of municipal water and wastewater facilities, distribution systems, and collection systems. The Municipality will support the successful candidate through the required training and certification progression for these systems.

This role is well suited to someone who is reliable, safety-conscious, mechanically inclined, and interested in developing a long-term career in municipal utilities.

Training Pathway

This is an Operator-in-Training opportunity. Applicants are not expected to already hold the certifications listed below; however, the successful candidate will be expected to work toward them with support from the Municipality. The Municipality will pay for approved training, courses, exam fees, and certification related costs required for the successful candidate to progress toward the certifications needed for the municipal utility systems.

  • Class III Water Treatment Facility
  • Class II Wastewater Treatment Facility
  • Class II Water Distribution System
  • Class II Wastewater Collection System
Key Responsibilities

Asset Qualifications
  • Existing Operator-in-Training certification or any Manitoba water or wastewater operator certification.
  • Experience in municipal operations, construction, agriculture, trades, mechanical maintenance, equipment operation, or a related field.
  • Class 3A or higher driver's license.
  • Experience working around pumps, valves, mechanical systems, controls, or heavy equipment.
Training Expectations

The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in training, write required certification exams, and make reasonable progress toward the operator certifications required for the Municipality's facilities and systems. Training milestones and wage progression will be reviewed with the successful candidate as part of the Municipality's supported certification pathway.
