Job summary

Qualifications

• Must hold Class 2 Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by Manitoba.

• Valid Class 5 Manitoba driver's licence.
• Three years of experience in a Water Treatment Facility.
• Willingness to pursue further certifications.
• Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces; able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Operate water treatment equipment to meet safety and distribution standards.
• Assist Class 3 and 4 Operators with daily duties.
• Maintain cleaning and maintenance of facility equipment.
• Collect water samples for testing and record results.

Position Conditions: This permanent, full-time opportunity of 40 hours per week will include evening & weekend shifts. This position will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and CUPE Local 69. First consideration will be given to current City of Brandon CUPE employees.The City of Brandon reserves the right to underfill this position.

The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.

Rate of Pay: $33.26 - $42.94 per hour (2026 Rates)

• Operator in Training/Underfill 2026 Rate: $29.21 per hour

PURPOSE OF POSITION

To participate as part of a working team that operates a variety of equipment and machinery, performing the tasks required for the safe and efficient operations of the City’s water treatment systems. Assists the Class 4 and/or Class 3 Operators with operating the equipment that processes water to acceptable standards for distribution to the public.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supports the Class 4 and/or Class 3 Operator by performing routine duties in the operation of the mechanical equipment such as boilers, pumps, valves, filters, chemical dosing, treatment equipment, and all other necessary systems in the operation of the Water Treatment Facility;
• Supports the Utility Maintenance staff by performing routine duties in servicing mechanical equipment such as the boiler, pumps, valves, filters, chemical treating equipment, and all other equipment necessary in the operation of the Water Treatment Facility;
• Cleans assigned areas of the Water Treatment Facility and performs building and grounds maintenance tasks;
• Maintains records required in the operation of the Water Treatment Facility;
• Collects samples used for testing water quality;
• Receives, unloads and stores materials and chemicals used at the Water Treatment Facility;
• Maintains a sufficient supply of chemicals in the feeders;
• Learns to perform the duties of the Class 3 and/or 4 Operator;
• Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Grade 12, G.E.D., C.A.E.C., or Mature High School Diploma;
• Must hold and maintain a Class 5 Province of Manitoba driver’s licence;
• A Class 2 Operator’s Certificate in Water Treatment as issued by the Province of Manitoba;
• Any additional certification required under Provincial guidelines and legislation;
• Minimum three (3) years experience in a Water Treatment Facility;
• Must possess the ability to work in heights, confined spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs;
• Must be willing to participate in continuing education in order to achieve further certifications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Two – four years’ post-secondary education in a science field;
• A Class 5 Power Engineering certification issued under the Power Engineer’s Act and regulation within twenty-four (24) months of appointment;
• A Class 4 Power certification issued under the Power Engineer’s Act and regulation within forty-eight (48) months of appointment;

WORK CONDITIONS

The Class 2 Water Treatment Operator works independently and in a team environment.

• Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees (daily);
• Self motivated and quality driven to perform all testing and record keeping and operating all equipment (daily);
• Works in areas of confined space, heights, unpleasant noise levels, and adverse odours (daily);
• Adaptable to working within a seven (7) day week schedule comprising of rotating shift work;
• Responsible to the Chargehand of Water Treatment.
