Job summary

Taproot Community Support Services is a 100% employee-owned organization delivering over 125 community-based services annually across Canada. The Disability Services Worker role in Westlock provides education, development support and supervision in residence and in the community to individuals with disabilities.

Reporting to a Team Leader, you will work a 42-hour week with rotating schedules, support crisis situations, and maintain care plans.

Qualifications

  • MUST HAVE 2 years experience working with individuals with significant mental health concerns, aggressive behaviours and/or trauma.
  • MUST be able to provide personal care and handle bodily fluids.
  • Minimum Grade 12 or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Special Education, Recreation or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years working experience with persons with developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License with acceptable driving abstract and reliable vehicle.
  • A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right to define and pursue their life choices, and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
  • Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self-help, etc.
  • Background in supporting people with addictions, schizophrenia, and/or FASD is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support/supervise clients' complex behavioural, emotional and social needs/development in the residence and during community activities.
  • Assist individuals with household chores, life skills and personal hygiene as needed.
  • Provide supports as per each individual's care plan.
  • Provide immediate crisis support and use de-escalation techniques.
  • Administer medication and provide first aid if necessary.
  • Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes/observations.

Taproot Community Support Services Community Disability Services team in Westlock encourages persons with developmental disabilities build on their strengths, further develop life skills, overcome barriers and actively participatein their community, especially music events, church as well as recreation activities such as swimming (requiring direct staff support).

The Position

The Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians and employers. This position reports to the Team Leader.

Scheduling

One (1) permanent, full-time position that will work average of 42 hours per week:

  • 12 hour shifts, 2100-0900
  • Positions will follow a two-week rotating schedule, working alternating weekends.

An additional $3.30 per hour will be paid when supporting complex needs clients. This additional amount does not apply to scheduled trainings/meetings and non-complex shifts.

In Your Role You Will
  • Support/supervise clients' complex behavioural, emotional and social needs/development (in the residence & during community activities) and participate in vocational, recreational, leisure activities along with client.
  • Support individuals with household chores, life skills, personal hygiene (if needed).
  • Provide supports as per the individual's care plan
  • Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours
  • Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary.
  • Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client
  • A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview.
  • Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.
As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety,
