Job summary

Taproot Community Support Services in Westlock is seeking a Disability Services Worker (DSW) to provide education and development support to individuals in residence and in the community. You will build relationships with families, guardians and local providers, and report to the Team Leader.

The role involves driving to access community resources and events, supporting daily living, crisis de-escalation, and medication administration when required. A Class 5 license is mandatory.

Qualifications

  • Must have Grade 12 or a related Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies or equivalent.
  • One year of experience with persons with developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver License with reliable vehicle mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and monitor education and development programs.
  • Provide physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports in residence and in the community.
  • Develop relationships with community, family members, guardians and employers.
  • Administer medication and first aid when necessary.
  • Document notes and observations using a computer program.
  • Crisis de-escalation and responsive intervention when needed.

Taproot Community Support Services Community Disability Services team in Westlock encourages persons with developmental disabilities build on their strengths, further develop life skills, overcome barriers and actively participate in their community, especially music events, church as well as recreation activities such as swimming (requiring direct staff support).


The Position

The Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians and employers. This position reports to the Team Leader.


This DSW position involves picking up and driving person served, so that they can access community resources and events that can include bingo, shopping, banking and various other events.


Scheduling


  • 0900-1700


One (1) temporary, full-time position that will work 32 hours per week. The position requires the incumbent to be flexible with scheduling, based upon the needs and appointments of the person served.


Note

While this role is posted and functions as a Full Time position, it may be coded as Part Time for payroll system purposes only. This internal designation will not affect scheduled hours, compensation, benefits, or entitlements.


In Your Role You Will


  • Support individuals with household chores, life skills, personal hygiene (if needed).

  • Provide supports as per the individual's care plan

  • Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours

  • Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary.

  • Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client

  • A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview.

  • Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.


As An Ideal Candidate You Possess


  • Candidate must be physically able to participate in recreation activities such as swimming, walking, basketball, etc. to support persons-served desire to be physically active

  • Minimum Grade 12 or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Special Education, Recreation or equivalent

  • One (1) year experience working with persons with developmental disabilities is preferred.

  • MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License with acceptable driving abstract and reliable vehicle

  • A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices, and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.

  • Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self-help, etc.


ALSO Helpful, But Will Train If Needed


  • First Aid/CPR Certification

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training

  • Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
