Job summary

Taproot Community Support Services in Penticton, BC, seeks an Overnight Residence Worker to support adults with complex care needs in a new staffed home. The role emphasizes safety, life skills, and compassionate care in a residential setting.

The position requires staying awake during overnight shifts, providing medication administration, and maintaining detailed reports. Union BCGEU membership is required. This is a 24-hour per week, Thursday–Saturday role with potential extension.

Qualifications

  • G-tube feeding training is considered an asset; willingness to learn is required.
  • FoodSafe certification is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in assessing, setting goals, and planning individual program plans.
  • Provides life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care, finances.
  • Assists with activities of daily living including feeding, transfers, hygiene, grooming and toileting.
  • Performs client-focused activities in accordance with care plans.
  • Recognises and reports potential emergency situations to ensure safety.
  • Administers medication to clients according to policy and procedures.
  • Contributes to development of program plans and progress reports.
  • Provides emotional support to residents and families.
  • Transports residents to appointments and activities, and drives safely.
  • Maintains residential/housekeeping duties and reports.
  • Identifies community services to meet residents’ needs and liaises with agencies.
  • Participates in OHS activities as required.

The Program

Our new staffed residential home is located in sunny South Okanagan - Penticton, BC. The home is designed specifically for adults with differing abilities. The program will provide specialized support for individuals with complex care needs, focusing on positive relationships and strengthening connections within their community. The home will offer a safe and supportive environment tailored to meet individual needs while promoting dignity, respect and inclusion.

The Position

Under supervision, the Residence Worker (RW) with overnight awake scheduling, is responsible for assisting clients to live successfully in residential settings in an accredited agency. Ensures physical, emotional, social, educational and medical needs are met. Assists clients to enhance quality of life with activities of daily living and the development of life skills. Provides behavioral support and supervision in the program and community, implements and monitors individual program plans through observation and accurate reporting, and participates in operating and maintaining the program.

This Overnight Awake position attends to the health, well-being, safety and security of persons served (PS) and the program site at night, and provides general, non-specific services to PS as required. Maintains a comfortable and clean living environment.

This position requires union membership with BCGEU.

Scheduling
  • One (1) temporary part-time position, working 24 hours per week:
  • Thursday through Saturday, 2300-0700
  • Duration of position is dependent on incumbent, estimated until January 2027.
In Your Role You Will
  • Participates in assessing, setting goals, and planning (individual program plans, personal service plans) for individuals in program; documents, implements and contributes to program evaluation.
  • Provides life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care skills and personal finance; implements personal service plans.
  • Assists clients with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifts, transfers, hygiene, grooming and toileting, including transfer of function duties such as gastrostomy feeding, tracheostomy management, and suction and bowel management as required.
  • Participates in various client-focused activities in accordance with care plans.
  • Recognises, analyses and deals with potential emergency situations such as client’s aggressive behaviour to ensure no harm comes to the client and/or the public; reports problems to supervisor.
  • Administers medication to clients in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  • Assists with case management by identifying potential problems and reporting any difficulties; provides input to counsellor or professional regarding the development of appropriate program plans to achieve residents’ objectives; contributes to the evaluation of residents’ progress and prepare reports.
  • Provides emotional support and feedback to residents and their families.
  • Transports and assists residents to appointments, shopping or leisure activities; operates motor vehicles safely and legally while transporting clients or on Taproot business.
  • Performs residential maintenance and housekeeping duties such as laundry, sweeping, mopping floors, mowing lawns, inventory, shopping, cleaning equipment and foodservices.
  • Maintains reports such as statistics, logbooks and daily activities relating to clients.
  • Identifies social, economic, recreational and educational services in the community that will meet clients’ needs; maintain liaison with other agencies, professionals, government officials, and the community.
  • Utilises practices that promote health, welfare, safety and security of persons served.
  • Participates in the OHS Committee as required.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as required.

  • Positive behavior supports experience
