Covenant Health in Edmonton is seeking a Unit Clerk to support a busy 5 East Surgical Care Unit on a 0.70 FTE schedule. The role handles administrative operations, liaises with patients and clinical staff, and ensures accurate documentation and timely communication on admissions, transfers, and discharges.

Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Unit Clerk performs clerical duties on a busy surgery post-operative inpatient unit. The new 5 East Surgical Care Unit opening Fall 2026 will support all surgical services at the site including Gynecological, Plastics, General, Urology, and Orthopedic Surgeries. This 36-bed unit is high turnover with high acuity, and the successful candidate requires excellent communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills to support the team of nursing and other health care professionals in order to ensure the unit operates in an efficient and effective manner. The Unit Clerk also supports the Unit Manager and other leaders in the program by completing trackers, audits, minutes and review of operating KPIs as required.
The Unit Clerk is a vital member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, responsible for managing the full scope of administrative operations on designated care, treatment, and unit care areas. Acting as a central liaison among patients, families, and clinical staff, the Unit Clerk ensures timely and accurate communication, documentation, and coordination of care related processes. Unit Clerks apply their knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare systems to support admissions, transfers, and discharges; maintain essential records; and facilitate smooth unit workflow. They also oversee inventory and supplies, assist with scheduling and timekeeping functions, and serve as Downtime Captains during system outages, helping ensure continuity of operations in high pressure environments. In rare or exceptional circumstances, and in the interest of maintaining seamless, efficient, and patient centred care, the Unit Clerk may provide limited assistance to clinical colleagues within the boundaries of their training, skills, and established role. Together, these responsibilities highlight the essential contribution Unit Clerks make in creating an organized, responsive, and reliable care environment that supports patients, residents and the interdisciplinary team. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the CUPE 2111 Collective Agreement.
Must have a Certificate from a recognized training program which includes a practicum component. A course in Medical Terminology is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:One - Two years of recent (within the last two years) experience in a medical / surgical acute care setting. Must display a positive, professional demeanor at all times and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must be self-motivated, action driven and show proactive initiative in maintaining and organizing workflow. Extensive proficiencies in Microsoft office programs (Office, Word, Excel), medical programs such as Connect Care and E-facilities and a high proficiency in typing and formatting. Demonstrated experience working with program ordering supplies and direct purchasing orders through oracle and other vendors.
Preferred Qualifications:Excellent communication and organizational skills an asset. Drive to improve unit operations through quality projects an asset. Excellent comprehension of medical and surgical terminology.
