The Health Care Aide role on the 5 East Surgical Care Unit at Misericordia Community Hosp in Edmonton supports patients after surgery across gynecological, plastics, general, urology and orthopedics. You will work with the nursing team on a 0.76 FTE schedule to provide direct personal care and monitor health status.
Applicants must be CLHA-registered with current BLS, and able to assist with mobility and lifting. Shifts include days, evenings and weekends.
Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Health Care Aide performs patient care on a busy surgery post-operative inpatient unit. The new 5 East Surgical Care Unit opening Fall 2026 will support all surgical services at the site including Gynecological, Plastics, General, Urology, and Orthopedic Surgeries. This 36-bed unit is high turnover with high acuity and the successful candidate requires excellent communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills to support the team of nursing and other health care professionals. A high level of independence and collaboration with the nursing team is required to meet the needs of the patient populations and ensure that the unit operates efficiently and effectively. The Health Care Aide (HCA) is a regulated health professional who provides direct personal care and health support services to clients across the lifespan, in accordance with their scope of practice, regulatory standards, and government legislation. Functional supervision is provided by a member of the nursing team and may occur directly or indirectly in accordance with client needs, care context, and regulatory standards. Working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team the HCA provides care in alignment with documented care plans and assigned or delegated tasks, delivering assistance with activities of daily living, monitoring and reporting changes in health status, and supporting the physical, emotional, psychosocial and behavioural well being of clients.HCAs attend to clients¿ comfort, engagement, and safety by recognizing changes in behaviour, responsiveness, participation, or signs of distress, and by promptly sharing observations with the appropriate team member. They play a vital role in promoting comfort, dignity, and continuity of care, and demonstrate flexibility in responding to the needs of clients and the care team. HCAs actively engage in continuous improvement through feedback, self-reflection, and learning opportunities. The role requires initiative, openness to growth, and a strong commitment to professionalism, responsibility, and accountability. This includes intentionally living Covenant¿s values in day-to-day practice and reflecting them in decision-making, client interactions, teamwork, and the overall approach to care.
Must be registered with and hold a valid practice permit from College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) prior to commencing employment.
Additional Required Qualifications:At least one year of related General Surgery or Orthopedic Surgery experience required, within the last two years. Current Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C). Physically able to assist with all aspects of patient/resident care and transport, e.g. walking, standing, bending, lifting and turning and other physical tasks required on the unit. Must be able to lift weights up to 11 kg (24 pounds) and push/pull weights up to 27 kg (60 pounds).
