The Underwriter plays a crucial role in conducting thorough evaluations of new business submissions of personal lines insurance products. This position is responsible for uploading new business information to our market partners through their company portals and ensuring compliance with industry regulations and internal underwriting guidelines. The Underwriter will contribute to our organizational values by managing risks effectively while fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.
What does the Underwriter do?
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of new insurance applications to determine risk levels and coverage suitability, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines.
  • Analyze and interpret data to evaluate risk exposure, contributing to sound decision-making that supports the company's growth objectives.
  • Ensure Brokers are strictly following BIG & Market underwriting guidelines and that the submissions are timely and accurate
  • Prepare and issue policies accurately and in a timely manner, reinforcing our commitment to customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Upload new business information through various insurance company portals, facilitating smooth transactions and maintaining strong relationships with market partners.
  • Efficiently manage and follow up on abeyances and Service Improvement Opportunities (SIOs)
  • Address Broker or Market escalations, attempting to deescalate the situation & resolve the issue
  • Maintain organized records of underwriting processes, decisions, and communications to support auditing and review activities.
  • Liaise with branch offices to address underwriting queries and provide support, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Generate and present underwriting reports to management, offering insights into risk management and business performance.
  • Ensure all underwriting decisions are consistent with company policies and market appetite, which helps maintain the integrity of the underwriting process.
  • Work closely with branch teams to support clients in understanding their coverage options, enhancing client experience and trust.
  • Address and resolve underwriting-related issues promptly, showcasing our commitment to integrity and customer service.
  • Actively seek and implement feedback from management and branch teams to improve underwriting processes and efficiency.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office and proprietary underwriting platforms effectively to streamline operations and improve productivity.
  • Monitor personal performance against established metrics to identify areas for improvement and support career growth.
  • Stay updated with industry regulations and legal standards to ensure all underwriting activities meet compliance requirements, thereby protecting the organization from potential liabilities.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training to enhance underwriting skills and knowledge of market trends.

Qualifications
  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in insurance underwriting or a related field.
  • Post secondary education in Insurance, finance, business administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Appropriate licensing as an insurance broker by a relevant regulatory body an asset
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) professional designation an asset
  • Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) professional designation an asset
