Job summary

Sylvan Learning Center in Burnaby/Coquitlam is seeking tutors for Kindergarten through Grade 12 to deliver Sylvan Reading, Writing and Math programs. Expect three days per week with afternoon/evening shifts; some Saturday mornings may be added in the future.

Sessions are conducted with small student-teacher ratios using Sylvan materials; no lesson planning required and local travel between two campuses is possible.

Qualifications

• Teaching credentials or active pursuit of education studies.
• 1–2 years of teaching experience preferred.
• Strong written and verbal English communication.
• Ability to engage and inspire students across ages.

Responsibilities

• Prepare for instructional sessions and gather materials.
• Greet students and initiate instruction to engage each learner.
• Instructs students according to Sylvan program designs.
• Manage sessions with balanced tasks and time.
• Evaluate and record student progress on programs.
• Use praise and tokens to keep students motivated.
• Communicate student needs to centre staff.
• Attend staff meetings and ongoing training.
• Complete certification training for taught Sylvan programs.

Job description

Sylvan teachers are responsible for creating a positive personal learning experience for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 in Reading, Writing and Math. All students are taught in a small student-teacher ratio, and using Sylvan program materials. We differ from other tutoringcentres in that we provide you with the materials to teach. No lesson planning, parent meetings or take-home work!

Interviews and training will be conducted at the Coquitlam location (3039 Anson Ave.).

We are looking for a commitment ofminimum three days per weekduring the following times:

• Monday through Friday afternoons/evenings from 2:30-7:30pm
• Saturday morning shifts may become available in future

OurBurnabylocation is connected with theCoquitlam location. If you can work at either location, flexibility is an asset :)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Prepares for each instructional session; gathers and prepares materials as appropriate
• Greets students and initiates instruction to personally engage each student
• Instructs students according to the design of the Sylvan programs
• Manages students, tasks and time to create a balanced and robust instructional session
• Evaluates and records the progress of each student on their program assignment
• Uses praise and encouragement to ensure students are engaged and inspired to learn
• Motivates students with Sylvan tokens, and records/tracks tokens earned by students
• Communicates specific student needs to centre staff
• Attends periodic staff meetings and completes ongoing training as needed
• Completes certification training on each Sylvan program taught to students

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Teaching credentials OR attending post-secondary (minimum 3rd year) with the intention of pursuing education
• Minimum of one or two years of teaching experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

• Knowledge of iPads, Zoom, Google Drive/Docs and Microsoft Word
• Have strong communication skills (written and verbal) in English
• Proven ability to engage, motivate, and inspire students of all ages to learn
• Ability to multi-task and be flexible
• Have a reliable form of transportation
