What will my role be?

A traffic control person (TCP) is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and equipment through and around active construction zones. The traffic control person ensures compliance with traffic management plans and protects the safety of workers, motorists, and the public by maintaining clear communication and control at all times.

As a Traffic Control Person, you will:

• Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, signs, and temporary signals in accordance with approved traffic management plans and regulatory standards.
• Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic safely through or around construction sites using hand signals, stop/slow paddles, radios, and other approved communication methods.
• Monitor traffic flow and adjust control measures as necessary to prevent congestion, minimize delays, and maintain safety.
• Coordinate with site supervisors, equipment operators, and other TCPs to ensure smooth operation of the work zone.
• Remain alert and aware of site activities, traffic conditions, and potential hazards to prevent accidents and respond promptly to emergencies.
• Provide clear and courteous guidance to the public, drivers, and delivery personnel entering or passing through the work area.
• Inspect and maintain traffic control equipment and signage to ensure they are in good condition and properly positioned.
• Document and report any incidents, unsafe behaviour, or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor or safety officer.
• Follow all company and regulatory safety procedures, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and participate in site safety meetings and briefings.

• Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license: Being able to travel to multiple sites—often early in the morning or in remote locations is key to reliability and flexibility on our dynamic projects.
• Experience in Roadwork or Construction Environments: Familiarity with heavy equipment movement, staging, and site logistics helps you anticipate hazards and keep both workers and drivers safe.
• Strong Communication and Conflict Resolution Skills: Dealing with the public and coordinating with site supervisors requires calm, clear communication—even under pressure or in high-traffic situations.
• Certification in Traffic Control (Book 7 or Equivalent): Formal training ensures you’re up to date with Ontario traffic control regulations and best practices for setting up safe and effective work zones.
• Demonstrated Punctuality and Dependability: Crews rely on traffic control to begin work safely and on time. Showing up prepared each day is one of the most important assets in this role.
• Willingness to extend hours, when necessary: Traffic control often depends on road closures, deliveries, or weather—flexibility with start times and overtime is essential to meet shifting schedules.
• Positive Attitude and Team-Oriented Mindset: You are often the first and last face people see on a job site. Representing our team with professionalism and courtesy contributes to a safe, respectful environment.
