Job summary

Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta is seeking a Theatre Technician to support events across multiple venues. The role is a flexible, casual position with variable hours, including evenings and weekends, reporting to the General Manager and Lead, Technical Theatre Operations.

Qualifications

• Two-year diploma or journeyman ticket.

Responsibilities

• Works events in scheduled technical department (Audio, Lighting, Stage, Video).
• Provides set up for non-performance activities in theatres such as instruction or rehearsal.
• Ensures Lead informs needs to support performance activities safely.
• Performs live sound reinforcement, digital sound/video recording and presentations.
• Prepares audio equipment for operation and supervises safe use by technicians.
• Performs live lighting shows and designs/sets up lighting configurations.
• Assists with digital video recording and presentations.
• Prepares lighting equipment for operation and supervises safe use by lighting technicians.
• Assists with rigging and hanging of scenic/marketing assets; cleans stage surfaces.
• Maintains theatre equipment and performs maintenance under supervision.
• Maintains archive video/audio recordings and digital assets.

About the Role

Working within department of Event and Theatre Services, this is a flexible position whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week.

The Theatre Technician reports to the General Manager, Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts and is under the direction of the Lead, Technical Theatre Operations who is responsible for supervision and direction relating to hours of work, work assignment, client needs, technical operations and maintenance. The Theatre Technician is responsible for supporting events in the Bella Concert Hall, TransAlta Pavilion, Hal and Marnie Wyatt Atelier, Wright, Leacock, Nickle Theatres, TransCanada Amphitheatre. Ross Glen Hall and other locations known further as the “Performance and Event Venues”. Provides on site supervision of event producer staff and contracted technicians. Also provides set up and operation for non-performance activities in performance venues such as instruction or rehearsal. Assists with the coordination of knowledge and information base for equipment.

Responsibilities

• Provides set up for non-performance activities in theatres such as instruction or rehearsal.
• Ensures that the Lead, Technical Theatre Operations is appropriately informed as to the needs to efficiently and safely support performance activities in the Performance Venues.
• Performs live sound reinforcement, digital sound recording, digital video recording, video presentation and computerized presentations.
• Prepares audio equipment for operation by show audio technicians and supervises the safe use of equipment by the show audio technicians.
• Performs live lighting shows (busking), programs lighting shows under client direction, designs and sets up lighting fixture configurations to meet event needs.
• Assists with digital video recording, video presentations and computerized presentations.
• Prepares lighting equipment for operation by show lighting technicians and supervises the safe use of equipment by the show lighting technicians.
• Assists with rigging and hanging of all scenic and marketing assets; andEnsures that stage surfaces are properly cleaned and prepared for performance.
• Performs maintenance of theatre specific equipment and performs some regular routine and/or required maintenance of theatre related equipment under the supervision of Heads of Department and/or Lead, Technical Theatre Operations.
• Maintenance includes both performing physical repairs and maintaining digital assets and record ie. the organization and distribution of archive video and audio recordings.

Qualifications

• Two-Year Diploma from a University or Equivalent or Journeyman Ticket.
• 2-3 years experience.
• Work requires heavy visual concentration and/or physical exertion, effort and strain. Forces exerted are equivalent to lifting between 11-23 kg (25-50 lbs).

Salary:$33.61 - $42.53 per hour
