Job summary

A community-focused charity in Calgary is looking for a Part-Time Theatre Arts Instructor. You will prepare lesson plans and teach participants aged 6-17 in theatre skills, ensuring an inclusive instructional approach. The ideal candidate will have relevant educational qualifications, experience teaching or working in the field, and a valid First Aid certification. This role provides a supportive environment for participants, contributing to their creative development and performance skills. Qualifications

  • Experience teaching or working in theatre or performing arts.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification.
  • Evidence of cleared police security clearance.
  • Clear police security clearance including a vulnerable sector search.
  • Provide three professional references.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare lesson plans and teach participants aged 6-17 in theatre skills.
  • Develop and offer input into the curriculum for arts programming.
  • Create and present a theatrical presentation with participants.
  • Work with volunteers and help create a final theatre presentation.
  • Ensure health and safety practices and maintain confidentiality.

What qualifications are we looking for?
  • Associated Degree(s) or diploma(s) in related field (drama, performing arts, teaching, working with youth)
  • Previous experience teaching/working in the field
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR‑C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John’s Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
  • Meet and maintain any other specific licensing requirements
  • Evidence of a cleared police security clearance including a vulnerable sector search
  • Three professional references required
What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?
  • Prepare lesson plans, teach and educate participants (ages 6‑17+) in theatre, physical theatre and performance skills, according to the curriculum
  • Help develop/offer input to the current curriculum, in alignment with the growth and development of all arts programming initiatives
  • Instructional approach is inclusive in nature, ensuring that all participants are involved equally
  • Involve volunteers in the classes in ways that are meaningful to the volunteers
  • Work with participants to create and present a theatrical presentation at the end of the session
  • The theatrical presentation is created, developed and rehearsed in a manner that includes all participants and their ideas in the process
  • Teach skills in drama relating to voice, character and physical theatre (mime, clown, and/or slapstick)
  • Develop a curriculum and plan for the classes to realize the objective of presenting a short, clear and clean theatrical presentation at the end of the session
  • Work with children from a diversity of backgrounds and needs
  • Assure the health and safety of participants by following health and safety practices and regulations
  • Provide a safe, fun, engaging, creative and supportive environment for participants and volunteers
  • Exceptional organizational, multi‑tasking, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills
  • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal skills with a focus on customer service
  • Strong attention to detail and exceptional follow‑through
