Position Summary:
The Applied Mental Health Research Group at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is currently seeking a Senior Research Associate (SRA) to assist in managing exciting care-oriented, pragmatic clinical studies in the field of dementia and complex psychiatric disorders. Reporting to the Endowed Chair, Applied Mental Health Research, the Senior Research Associate will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the research operations in the Applied Mental Health Research Group. They will be responsible for monitoring patient participants recruitment processes, human resource management, training new staff (including graduate students, research analysts, assistants, and coordinators) on all clinical, symptom and cognitive measures used for research projects as well as research regulatory processes, conduct observation of staff assessment skills and determine readiness for patient contact, and providing coordination and leadership to the team. In addition, the candidate will provide assistance and management of important components such as communicating with national and international collaborators, and liaising with the local research ethics board to ensure compliance of all scientific activities, including research, scientific, clinical, and research ethics board protocols. You will be required to support the Endowed Chair in completion of future grant submissions and extensions, provide progress reports to granting agencies, and prepare and review academic manuscripts for publication. This position reports to the Director, Research and Academics with academic supervision provided by the Endowed Chair, Applied Mental Health Research.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Ontario Shores Endowed Chair, Applied Mental Health Research, internal and external partners, develop new ideas for research that lead to an independent program of research congruent with the Ontario Shores’ Academic Plan;
- Prepare and submit research funding proposals;
- Identify upcoming funding opportunities and venues for disseminating research findings;
- Produce scholarly manuscripts, submit to journals and respond to reviewers and referees;
- Develop leadership skills through professional development, training courses and other internal and external opportunities;
- Provide scientific leadership to ensure efficiency of lab functions and outputs;
- Promote the work of the lab in developing interventions for people living with mental health challenges;
- Collaborate with Ontario Shores Research and Academics Department recruit, supervise, train and mentor students, research assistants, and volunteers in the lab;
- Ensure appropriate deployment of project resources with consideration of skill mix of students, research assistants, and volunteers in the site;
- Assign and review tasks given to students, research assistants, and volunteers in the site;
- Ensure coordination of internal and external data collection including, but not limited to face to face patient/staff interviews, video-recording, printed and electronic surveys, and focus groups;
- Coordinate lab members in editing and validating surveys, scanning completed surveys, coding and entering responses;
- Overseeing data entry, quality checking and analysis (NVivo/SPSS) by students, research assistants and volunteers in the site;
- Undertake proofreading and editing of spreadsheets, manuscripts and reports;
- Provide guidance to site team in the conduct literature reviews and the submission of Research Ethics Board applications;
- Create and produce slides and poster presentations;
- Establish and maintain databases of current research projects, financial status, scholarly output, external collaborators, and grants pipeline;
- Supports monitoring of grant budgets and periodic reporting to funding organizations;
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in health-related field (PhD an asset) in health-related field such as Psychology, Public Health, Nursing, Occupational Therapy
Years of Experience:
- 5-7 years’ experience supporting research at an academic department, research institute or organization
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in mental health research an asset
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in pharmacogenomics research or related topic
Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to take initiative and handle responsibility;
- Demonstrated effective organizational and time management skills;
- High level of ability managing own workload and other team members;
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and support development of junior members;
- Responsible to recognize and report patient, staff, and environment safety issues, identify and implement preventative and corrective actions, within the scope of this role;
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to interact with multiple stakeholder groups internally and externally;
- Ability to provide leadership to projects internally and externally;
- Advanced computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access;
- Familiarity and experience of preparing and submitting REB application and detailed knowledge Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans;
- Excellent knowledge of APA (American Psychological Association) manuscript formatting;
