Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking a hands-on Waste Technician in Ottawa to support diverse waste streams. You’ll receive thorough training and handle bulk and containerized waste, perform sampling for lab analyses, and operate pumps and pressure washers as part of equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities include safe waste processing, paperwork, and weekend Hazardous Waste events, with a focus on customer service and SOP compliance in a busy facility setting.

Qualifications

• Must be clean shaven. (for respirator usage).
• Physically fit (repetitive lifting of hoses and shoveling of soil).
• Must be comfortable working at heights (climbing to catwalks above tanks to dip them, climb on top of tankers and trucks to sample).

Responsibilities

• Receive all client waste – bulk liquids/solids and containerized.
• Load and unload waste vehicles including vacuum trucks, tankers, straight trucks, and van trailers.
• Take samples from waste vehicles and containers for lab analysis.
• Operate plant machinery including pumps and pressure washers; and assist with general maintenance.
• Complete paperwork properly & ensure it is submitted.
• Attend Household Hazardous Waste collection events on weekends.
• General shop clean-up and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

• 1 Week of Training on the day shift, plus 3 additional courses during the first 3 months on day shift
• Be trained to enter Confined Spaces, such as bulk tanks, tankers, and vacuum trucks for cleaning.
• Receive all client waste – both bulk liquids/solids and containerized.
• Ensure waste is processed in a timely and safe manner.
• Prepare shipments of hazardous and non-hazardous waste for transport.
• Ensure incoming waste conforms with acceptance protocol.
• Load and unload waste vehicles including vacuum trucks, tankers, straight trucks, and van trailers.
• Take samples from waste vehicles and containers for lab analysis.
• Operate plant machinery including pumps and pressure washers; and assist with general maintenance.
• Gain a full understanding and working knowledge of the company’s standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensure they are followed.
• Complete paperwork properly & ensure it is submitted.
• Complete job hazard risk assessments
• Ensure superior customer service is provided.
• General shop clean-up and maintenance.
• Attend Household Hazardous Waste collection events on weekends.
• Other tasks as required.
