Purpose of the Position

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Drafter will be responsible for providing pipeline layout information to all aspects of the construction project with a high level of accuracy, ensuring the design criteria is adhered to and well documented.

Status of the Position

This is a temporary full-time position that will be 6 months. The work schedule will be 5 days on (Monday – Friday). The employment term shall be dependent on the duration of the current project and future project workload.

Key Responsibilities

  • Completion of design drawings, quantity calculations, and as-built drawings for projects within various work types using various software packages (e.g., AutoCAD, Microstation, Bluebeam Revu, O’Calc, SPIDA Calc, Pull Planner, Civil 3D, Tremble Business Center).
  • Ability to interpret field survey data, coordinate, and communicate with field survey crews.
  • Provide calculations and assist with day-to-day workflows to field staff.
  • Prepare 3D models for use in GPS and Machine Control applications as applicable to work/project type.
  • Prepare engineering and survey plans.
  • Maintain accurate survey and drawing records, documentation, and submittals.
  • Read, understand, and generate RFIs and maintain records as applicable to work/project type.
  • Define the scope of work and provide layout information at various stages of construction.
  • Calculate volumes using various software and methods.
  • Maintain as-built records.
  • Interpret and adhere to legislative, project, and code requirements and client’s specifications (e.g., Ontario Standard Drawings).
  • Conduct QC verification on drawings/designs.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum of one year of AutoCAD drafting experience.
  • Post-secondary education in Civil/Mechanical Engineering, Geomatics, or design field, Architectural, or equivalent experience.
  • CET certified or CET eligible is an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD software and experience customizing AutoCAD, scripts, tools, and menus.
  • Good understanding of how to read civil engineering drawings and site plans.
  • Proficient with computers and software, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, quick learner, able to assume responsibilities, and work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Experience working with government bodies and familiarity with legislative requirements (e.g., Ministry of Transportation, city permit applications).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in basic design drawings, quantity calculations, and as-built drawings for utility projects using various software packages (e.g., AutoCAD, Microstation) with leadership support.
  • Collaborate with designers to ensure drawing accuracy.
  • Work with permit drawings and city websites to understand the full scope.
  • Liaise with designers and field staff to problem-solve.
  • Track project hours and stay within designated hours.
  • Perform other duties as required.
