Job summary

Vancouver Island University is seeking a Technical Training Assistant, HMT, to support the Heavy Mechanical Trades Program. This role handles tool repair, inventory, classroom preparation, and safety compliance, while assisting instructors and supervising students in the absence of teaching staff.

The incumbent maintains tools, coordinates purchases, and ensures all equipment is ready for classes. Strong focus on safety and proactive problem-solving with vendors is essential.

Qualifications

  • Must have Grade 12 diploma and relevant certifications.
  • Red Seal certification in related trade is required.
  • Class 5 or higher driver’s license is required.
  • WHMIS certification is required.
  • Lock-out procedures training is required.
  • Forklift certification is required.
  • OFA Level 1 or Basic First Aid is required.
  • Preferred: Provincial Instructor Diploma (PID).

Responsibilities

  • Repair, maintenance and inventory of tools and equipment used in the programs.
  • Provide support to instructors and prep classrooms for delivery of courses.
  • Instruct students on proper use and care of tools and supervise in the absence of an instructor.
  • Maintain and track shop tools; ensure equipment is in good working order and procure supplies.
  • Prepare materials in advance of classes and coordinate with vendors to resolve issues.
  • Emphasize student safety and ensure tools are used appropriately; perform regular preventive maintenance.

Job description

Duties:

The Technical Training Assistant, HMT (Heavy Mechanical Trades Program) plays a vital role in the successful and efficient delivery of Trades and Applied Technology Programs and courses. This role undertakes a wide variety of duties related to tool repair, maintenance and inventory, instructor and classroom preparation and support, safety compliance, and financial support activities.

The incumbent is responsible for dispensing and receiving of tools to and from students and provides support to Instructors, ensuring effective delivery of Trades and Applied Technology Programs. The Assistant provides instruction to students on the proper use and care of tools and supervises students in the absence of an instructor. The incumbent maintains and tracks the use of all shop tools, ensuring that all equipment is kept in good working order, and performs repairs as required. The incumbent is responsible for purchasing equipment, tools, and supplies and ensuring accurate inventory of these.

The Technical Training Assistant, HMT proactively ensures that all materials and supplies are ready in advance of classes taking place, and independently addresses any issues that arise working closely with vendors and industry. This role is focused on student safety and ensures that tools and equipment are being used appropriately.

The role requires regular preventative maintenance of all equipment, tools, computer software and systems used within the programs to ensure safety and a coordinated approach to repairs with limited disruption to the quality of the program.

Required Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 diploma
  • Red Seal certification in related trade
  • Class 5 or higher driver's license
  • WHMIS certification
  • Lock-out procedures training
  • Forklift certification
  • Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1; or, if issued after Nov 1, 2024, Basic First Aid
