Job summary

Vancouver Island University (VIU) invites applications for a Heavy Equipment Instructor to teach both the theory and hands-on components of the heavy equipment program. You will ensure program standards and assess student learning, providing timely feedback and grades.

You will join an instructional team to deliver integrated classroom and practical sessions while supporting students beyond the classroom and contributing to department initiatives at VIU.

Qualifications

  • Seven years' recent experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
  • Strong mechanical background.
  • Operate and maintain at least four pieces of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations and BC Construction Best Practices.
  • Familiarity with teaching adults.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience using MS Office tools.
  • Experience with Heavy Equipment GPS systems.
  • Energetic and enthusiastic approach.
  • Ability to adapt to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 2 certification.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.

Job description

Duties:

Teach all aspects of the theory and practical skills required to operate and maintain heavy equipment. Ensure program standards are maintained. Student evaluation and grading will be required. Work within an instructional team to deliver both classroom and practical instruction to meet student learning objectives.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of seven years' recent directly related experience working in the trade as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
  • A strong mechanical background.
  • Ability to operate and maintain at least four pieces of Heavy Equipment customarily used in Civil and Heavy Construction industry.
  • Knowledge of current WorkSafe BC regulations and BC Construction 'Best Practices'.
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated skills in teaching adults.
  • Excellent communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated skills using computer programs (word, excel, power point, outlook).
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated skills using Heavy Equipment GPS systems.
  • A high level of energy and enthusiasm is essential.
  • Successful candidates will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Must be certified for Occupational First Aid Level 2.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining heavy equipment relevant to the forest harvesting industry.
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated skills using Heavy Equipment Simulator systems.
  • Valid Class 1 BC Drivers' License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
