Job summary

Qualifications

  • Requires Recreational Therapy Degree and 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners with online and in-person strategies.
  • Knowledge of the scope and role of an Activity Assistant.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work independently and with VIU staff.
  • Proficient with relevant technology and software.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.

Job description

The Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services includes the Departments of Child and Youth Care, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Practical Nursing, Social Work, Kinesiology, and a Professional Development and Training department. The mission of the Faculty is to foster student success and develop and maintain relevant, responsive, and stimulating learning opportunities that are community-based, globally and locally, and offered in a visionary, interprofessional environment that is conducive to learning and promotes health and wellness for all. The Dean and the Dean's Office lead, manage, administer and support the instructional, scholarly and outreach activities of the Faculty on four campuses with this mission in mind.

Duties:

VIU's Faculty of Health and Human Services' Professional Development and Training Department is seeking instructors to deliver courses within the Activity Assistant certificate program both online and at the Nanaimo Campus for the 2026/2027 academic year. Duties include:

  • Plan, prepare and instruct program courses;
  • use creative adult learning strategies in the preparation and delivery of online, in-person and hybrid classroom learning;
  • assessment and evaluation of student learning;
  • recording and submitting grades;
  • providing support to students to ensure their success;
  • working collaboratively with colleagues and industry partners.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Required Qualifications:

Recreational Therapy Degree qualification from an appropriately accredited institution. Minimum 5 years of current and relevant experience as a Recreational Therapist.

  • Demonstrated competence for teaching or training adult learners, using a variety of online and in-person teaching strategies to address different learning styles and a diverse student population.
  • A solid understanding of the scope and role of an Activity Assistant.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the content covered in the course(s) being taught.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence while maintaining effective working relationships with relevant VIU department staff and partners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of relevant technology and software.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Provincial Instructors Diploma
  • Experience instructing in a post-secondary educational institution
  • Familiarity with online teaching platforms, for example D2L
