Job summary

OneSky Community Resources in Penticton is seeking a part-time Supportive Living Worker to empower persons with disabilities in inclusive communities. The role uses a person-centered approach and reports to the Team Leader.

Responsibilities include assessments, life skills training, daily living support, medication administration, and participation in case management. A valid driver’s license, First Aid/CPR, and physician health approval are required; safety training is provided by OneSky.

Qualifications

• Certificate in a related human/social service field or 1+ year related experience.
• Experience with people with dual diagnosis and challenging behaviours is an asset.
• Ability to calmly handle challenging behaviours and maintain safety.
• Experience with lifts, feeding protocols, toileting protocols, basic adaptive sign language is an asset.
• Understanding of developmental disability support needs.

Responsibilities

• Participates in assessment, goal setting and program planning for individuals in Supportive Living housing.
• Provides life skills training and implements personal service plans.
• Assists with activities of daily living including feeding, transfers, hygiene, and related tasks.
• Maintains program documentation and contributes to progress reports.
• Administers medications per policy and supports case management with program planning.
• Provides emotional support to participants and families; transports participants to appointments and activities.

Job Title: Supportive Living Worker (Internal)

Employment status: Reg Part-time union

Location: Penticton (floater role with shifts at LOE, DRA, and KEE)

Hours: 30 hours/week

Job Summary

The Supportive Living Worker is responsible to empower and support persons with disabilities as valued, contributing citizens in inclusive communities. The Supportive Living worker assists participants (or resident, individual, person) to live successfully in supportive living settings using a person-centered approach and respecting the participant’s rights and choices as an adult. The worker ensures that individual participant’s physical, emotional, social, educational, medical needs are met. The worker supports individuals to enhance quality of life with activities of daily living and the development of life skills, according to their choice. The worker reports to the program’s Team Leader.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Participates in the assessment, goal setting and program planning (Personal Service Plan) for individuals living in a Supportive Living house. Documents, implements and provides input into the evaluation of the program.
• Provides life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care skills and personal finance and implements personal service plans.
• Assists participants with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifts, transfers, hygiene, grooming and toileting. This may include transfer of function duties such as gastrostomy feeding, tracheostomy management, and suction and bowel management.
• Participates in various participant-focused activities in accordance with care plans.
• Recognizes, analyzes and deals with potential emergency situations such as participants’ aggressive behaviour to ensure no harm comes to the participant and/or the Reports problems to the supervisor.
• Administers medication to participants in accordance with established policy.
• Assists with case management by identifying potential problems and reporting any difficulties. Provides input to counsellor, professional, with regard to the development of appropriate program plans to achieve participants’ objectives. Contributes to the evaluation of participants’ progress and prepares reports.
• Provides emotional support and feedback to participants and their families.
• Transport and assists participants to appointments, shopping or leisure activities; operating all vehicles in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with all laws and regulations.

• Performs maintenance and housekeeping duties in the supportive living house, such as laundry, sweeping, mopping floors, mowing lawns, inventory, shopping, cleaning equipment and food services.
• Maintains reports such as statistics, data, logbooks, daily activities on participants.
• Identifies social, economic, recreational and educational services in the community that will meet participants’ needs
• Maintains liaison with other agencies, professionals, government officials and the community.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications, Education and Knowledge

• Certificate in a related human/social service field and/or at least one-year recent related experience working with persons with disabilities.
• Previous experience working with people with dual diagnosis and challenging and/or aggressive behaviours an asset.
• Essential to display a proven ability to work with challenging and aggressive behaviours calmly and effectively.
• Experienced with various lifts, feeding protocols, toileting protocols, basic adaptive sign language is an asset.
• Need to display an understanding and ability to work with individuals with developmental disabilities.
• Must display enthusiasm and energy and be a contributing team member.

Requirements

• Must have at least Class 7 driver's license to start and be able to obtain a Class 5 within 6 months
• Current First Aid and CPR
• Clear, current Criminal Record Check (provided by OneSky)
• A completed Physicians Approval of Health
• Food Safe Certification
• Safety-Care Training (provided by OneSky) – Mandt and NVCI also acceptable
• Use of own safe, reliable vehicle to transport participants with the ability to add “business use" insurance
• Willingness to join the BCGEU union
