Job summary

The Ottawa Hospital seeks a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor to lead the pharmacy technician team within the oncology program, ensuring medication safety and adherence to standards. The role collaborates with the Pharmacy Leadership team and interdisciplinary healthcare professionals across campuses to optimize distribution systems under regulatory guidelines.

The successful candidate will work across General Campus and Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre, with occasional duties at Civic Campus,

Qualifications

  • 2-year CCAPP accredited pharmacy technician program or international equivalent
  • Current unrestricted Part A Pharmacy Technician registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists
  • Five years' experience as a pharmacy technician including three years in hospital pharmacy

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day operational leadership and supervision of the pharmacy technician team
  • Support workforce planning, scheduling, performance management, and professional development
  • Contribute to medication stewardship, pharmacy informatics initiatives, quality improvement, and resource management under the direction of the Pharmacy Oncology and Pharmacy Operations Manager
  • Collaborate with Pharmacy Leadership and interdisciplinary healthcare teams within the oncology program

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor (PTS) is a registered Pharmacy Technician who practices within their scope of practice with a commitment to putting people first, quality, and medication safety.

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor (PTS) is a registered Pharmacy Technician who practices within their scope of practice with a commitment to putting people first, quality, and medication safety.


The PTS collaborates with the Pharmacy Leadership team and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to provide leadership to pharmacy technicians within the oncology program at the respective campuses. The role is accountable for the operational leadership and coordination of pharmacy technician medication distribution systems complying with federal and provincial legislation, regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, best practices, professional standards, and hospital policies and consideration of service level agreements/applicable contracts.


Key responsibilities include providing day-to-day operational leadership and supervision of the pharmacy technician team; supporting workforce planning, scheduling, performance management, and professional development; contributing to medication stewardship, pharmacy informatics initiatives, quality improvement, and resource management under the direction of the Pharmacy Oncology and Pharmacy Operations Manager.


This position has a primary home base at the General Campus (TOHCC). The successful candidate will typically work four (4) days per week at the General Campus, and one (1) day per week at the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre. This schedule may be adjusted periodically subject to operational needs. The successful candidate may also be required to work at the Civic Campus, as needed.


Rotation/Shifts

Days, 8-hour shifts.

Basic Requirements


  • 2-year Community College diploma from a Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP) accredited pharmacy technician program, or international equivalent;

  • Current unrestricted Part A Pharmacy Technician registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists;

  • Five years' experience as a pharmacy technician, including three years of hospital pharmacy technician experience;

  • Knowledge of change management, adult education principles and/or learning theory;

  • Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, electronic health records, office software, and database applications;

  • Knowledge of collective agreements, governance principles, and committee structures and Interrelatedness;

  • In depth knowledge of hospital practice, medication distribution systems, and safe medication practices;

  • Expert knowledge in pharmacy technician clinical practice, and knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care;

  • Knowledge of current legislation affecting pharmacy technicians and other health professionals;

  • In depth knowledge of the regulatory framework for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in Ontario considering NAPRA Standards and OCP Regulations and Standards;

  • Proven ability to work effectively with all members of a health care team;

  • Ability to build relationships with key stakeholders, including ability to lead, facilitate change and willingness to participate in work related initiatives;

  • Superior conflict management, project management, and problem-solving skills;

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, coaching, negotiation, and decision-making skills;

  • Strong leadership skills to support and provide directions to staff in a highly stressful and rapidly changing environment;

  • Ability to deal with difficult situations and crises;

  • Superior oral/written communication, and ability to interact with large groups, including presentation preparation and delivery to hospital executives;

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately;

  • Seeks innovative and creative solutions to challenges, thinks ahead, uses logic to anticipate steps and outcomes, recognizes patterns, and encourages this same openness and adaptability in others;

  • Ability to maintain a high level of concentration in a busy working environment;

  • Excellent financial management skills and ability to maintain a budget.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Hospital pharmacy technician leadership experience;

  • Managing/leading multiple direct reports in a unionized health care setting;

  • National/provincial pharmacy regulatory experience;

  • Knowledge of Accreditation Canada standards.
