Job summary

AltaLink is hiring a Summer Student to join the Field Operations South Team in Calgary (Rocky View County, AB). Reporting to the Manager, Substations South, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for operation and maintenance of AltaLink’s transmission substations in Alberta.

The start date is May 2027 and the term is 4 months. The role requires a full-time student returning to studies, enrolled in a related Technologist Diploma program (Electrical Engineering Technology).

Qualifications

• Full-time returning to studies student enrolled in a related and recognized Technologist Diploma program preferably Electrical Engineering Technology.
• Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
• Comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets.

Responsibilities

• Operate, inspect and maintain substation equipment (4160V- 500KV) associated with AltaLink’s transmission system.
• Provide maintenance planning and information regarding equipment status to schedulers and Control Center staff.
• Trouble respond to station facilities in the area and assist other disciplines as required.
• Assist Substations team on Capital upgrade and replacement work and with new technologies including SVC and PST.

Job Description:

An opportunity exists for a Summer Student with the Transmission Field Operations team located in Rocky View County, AB. Reporting to the Manager, Substations South, this position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the operation and maintenance of Altalink’s transmission substations in Alberta. The successful candidate will be required to reside in the Calgary area.

Responsibilities:

• Operate, inspect and maintain substation equipment (4160V- 500KV) associated with the AltaLink transmission system.
• Provide maintenance planning, schedulers and Altalink Control Center staff with information regarding equipment status and recommend improvements or replacements.
• Trouble response for stations facilities in the area.
• Assist and support other disciplines as required.
• Assist the Substations team on Capital upgrade and replacement work.
• Assist the Substation team with new technologies that include SVC and PST.
• As required, develop and implement a plan for substation work including review and understanding of work packages and related work practices, procedures, policies/standards and regulations, ensuring that all practices meet or exceed existing requirements.
• Ensure development and documentation of Safe Work Plans as required.
• Coordinate and provide emergency response to system emergencies as required.

• Full-time returning to studies student enrolled in a related and recognized Technologist Diploma program preferably Electrical Engineering Technology.
• Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.

• Be competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets.
• Willing to develop skills and a career in the Substation Technologist discipline.

• Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
• Demonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace.
• Strong mechanical as well as electrical aptitude.
• Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and comfortable working at heights.
• Willing to accept out of town working conditions and must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• This is a physically demanding position. To ensure we are meeting our safety requirements, you are required to be in good physical condition, have good manual dexterity and physical coordination and meet all physical fitness, medical and weight requirements.
• Knowledge and adherence to safety practices, procedures, and standards required.
• Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
