Job summary

AltaLink is seeking a Summer Student for the Transmission Field Operations team based in Calgary, AB. The role supports the Substations South team, assisting with operation, inspection and maintenance of high voltage substations, and contributes to safety, planning and outage readiness.

The position requires an enrolled student in a recognised Technologist Diploma program (Electrical Engineering Technology), a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work outdoors in all weather, at heights,

Qualifications

• Full-time returning to studies student enrolled in a related and recognized Technologist Diploma program preferably Electrical Engineering Technology.
• Must have valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and comfortable working at heights.
• Strong mechanical as well as electrical aptitude.
• Willing to accept out of town working conditions and meet physical fitness requirements.

Responsibilities

• Operate, inspect and maintain substation equipment (4160V- 500KV) for AltaLink’s transmission system.
• Provide maintenance planning information to schedulers and Control Center staff and suggest improvements.
• Trouble response for stations facilities in the area.
• Assist Substations team on capital upgrades and replacements.
• Develop and implement safe work plans and procedures.

Job Description:

NOTE: The start date is May 2027, and the length of the term is 4 months.

An opportunity exists for a Summer Student with the Transmission Field Operations team located in Rocky View County, AB. Reporting to the Manager, Substations South, this position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the operation and maintenance of Altalink’s transmission substations in Alberta. The successful candidate will be required to reside in the Calgary area.

Responsibilities:

• Operate, inspect and maintain substation equipment (4160V- 500KV) associated with the AltaLink transmission system.
• Provide maintenance planning, schedulers and Altalink Control Center staff with information regarding equipment status and recommend improvements or replacements.
• Trouble response for stations facilities in the area.
• Assist and support other disciplines as required.
• Assist the Substations team on Capital upgrade and replacement work.
• Assist the Substation team with new technologies that include SVC and PST.
• As required, develop and implement a plan for substation work including review and understanding of work packages and related work practices, procedures, policies/standards and regulations, ensuring that all practices meet or exceed existing requirements.
• Ensure development and documentation of Safe Work Plans as required.
• Coordinate and provide emergency response to system emergencies as required.

• Full-time returning to studies student enrolled in a related and recognized Technologist Diploma program preferably Electrical Engineering Technology.
• Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
• Be competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets.
• Willing to develop skills and a career in the Substation Technologist discipline.
• Effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive outcomes.
• Ability to work independently and part of a team.
• Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
• Demonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace.

• Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and comfortable working at heights.
• Willing to accept out of town working conditions and must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• This is a physically demanding position. To ensure we are meeting our safety requirements, you are required to be in good physical condition, have good manual dexterity and physical coordination and meet all physical fitness, medical and weight requirements.
• Knowledge and adherence to safety practices, procedures, and standards required.
• Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
