Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Protection & Controls Electrical Engineer-in-Training II to join our Transmission & Distribution Canada team. You will contribute to protection, control, and metering designs for substations from 12 kV to 500 kV and advance through project delivery stages.

The role emphasizes ownership of design deliverables, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and growth toward senior technical responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
• Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for / working toward P.Eng.
• 2–5 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design.
• Familiarity with substation protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and AC/DC designs.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors.
• Proven ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Responsibilities

• Design protection, control, and metering systems for substations (12 kV–500 kV) with limited supervision.
• Develop key deliverables such as one-line diagrams, protection schematics, and panel layouts.
• Prepare and review specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans.
• Assist in outage staging plans and commissioning documentation.
• Support relays and automation device configuration; review vendor drawings for alignment with specs.
• Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design, and constructability assessments.
• Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including RFIs and site visits.
