Job summary

Qualus Corporation seeks an ambitious Protection & Controls Electrical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) II to join our Transmission & Distribution Canada team in Vancouver. You will design protection, control, and metering systems for substations from 12 kV to 500 kV, guiding deliverables through early concept to commissioning.

You’ll develop schemes, prepare specs, review vendor drawings, and support FAT/SAT activities, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and advancing toward P.Eng.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
• Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for / working toward P.Eng. designation.
• 2–5 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design.
• Familiarity with substation protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and AC/DC designs.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors.
• Proven ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform and coordinate the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations (12 kV to 500 kV) with limited supervision.
• Support and gradually take ownership of key design deliverables, including one-line diagrams, protection schematics, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams, panel layouts and interconnection diagrams, and protection design criteria.
• Prepare and review engineering documents, including specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans.
• Assist in developing outage staging plans and commissioning documentation.
• Perform configuration support for protection relays and automation devices.
• Review vendor drawings and submissions to ensure alignment with project specifications.
• Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability assessments.
• Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including RFIs and site visits.
• Participate in FAT and inspections as required.
• Collaborate with civil/structural, electrical layout, telecom teams for coordinated designs.
• Manage assigned tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints.
• Demonstrate initiative in taking on increasing responsibility and contributing to problem-solving.
• Maintain documentation and contribute to QA and continuous improvement processes.
• Travel to client sites as required during project execution.

This role offers long-term workload stability, exposure to a diverse portfolio of utility projects, and the opportunity to take on increasing technical responsibility across all stages of substation project delivery.

You will contribute to protection, control, and metering system designs for substations ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV, supporting projects from early concept through construction and commissioning. This position is ideal for an engineer with several years of experience who is ready to grow technically, take ownership of design deliverables, and contribute to project execution within a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Minimum Qualifications
