Job summary

Qualifications

• Diploma or equivalent in counselling, substance use, social services, or related field.

Cedar Strong Prevention and Intervention Society is a nonprofit organization serving Hope and the surrounding area. We provide client-centred housing, shelter, advocacy, education, and support services to individuals and families in our community.

Position Overview:

Cedar Strong is seeking a Substance Use Prevention and Health Promotion Worker to support youth, families, schools, and the broader Hope community.

Reporting to the Program Manager, Family and Youth Services, the Worker delivers prevention education, early intervention, and health promotion activities. The role includes working with school personnel, facilitating groups, providing brief support and referrals, and building relationships with community partners.

The Worker will also help create and coordinate social media content about Cedar Strong's programs and activities. Experience with organizational social media is a preferred qualification.

Work Location: Based at Cedar Strong’s main office in Hope, BC, with work at School District 78 schools and other community locations.

Regular Work Schedule: Monday-Friday. Some activities may take place outside regular office hours to meet program and participant needs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Work with school staff to plan and deliver substance use prevention education and activities that promote healthy alternatives.
• Support peer helping initiatives, including the training and ongoing support of peer helpers.
• Provide classroom presentations and educational resources for students and school personnel.
• Meet with youth and families, provide brief support within the scope of the role, and connect them with appropriate services and supports.
• Develop and facilitate groups on topics such as coping skills, problem solving, relationships, and substance use awareness.
• Contribute to school health initiatives and community prevention activities.
• Provide information and presentations to school personnel, families, and community partners.
• Build and maintain working relationships with schools, service providers, and other community partners.
• Help plan, document, and evaluate prevention and health promotion activities.
• Create and coordinate social media content about Cedar Strong's programs and activities, following organizational approval and confidentiality practices.
• Maintain clear records and protect confidential information.
• Participate in staff meetings, training, and community events as required.
• Complete other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

• A diploma in counselling, substance use, social services, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Training in substance use prevention or intervention.
• At least two years of relevant experience working in a school environment.
• Experience delivering programs in community social services.
• Knowledge of community-based programs and services available to youth and families.
• Ability to facilitate groups and deliver engaging presentations.
• Strong interpersonal, written communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with school personnel, colleagues, families, and community partners.
• Sound judgment, respect for confidentiality, and an ability to adapt to changing needs during the workday.
• Experience creating social media content for an organization, including writing posts, planning content, or using tools such as Canva, is preferred.

Working Conditions:

The position involves work in schools, the community, and Cedar Strong program settings. Some activities may be scheduled outside regular office hours.

The Worker may support individuals and families experiencing substance use challenges and other complex circumstances. Respectful, non-judgmental, trauma-informed, and client-centred service is expected.
