Job summary

Keyano College’s Academic Success Centre is seeking Peer Tutors (Student Employees) to assist students with tutoring. Tutors work up to 9 hours per week during Aug 2026–Dec 2026, on campus in Fort McMurray, AB, with hours 8:30 am–4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Responsibilities include one-on-one and group tutoring, supporting educational technology, and helping students develop study skills. Tutors should be current Keyano College students who have demonstrated success in the subjects they tutor and

Qualifications

  • Must be a registered Keyano College student and legally allowed to work on-campus.
  • Minimum one semester of post-secondary education completed.
  • B+ grade or higher in the course(s) you tutor.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to clearly explain concepts.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and intercultural skills.
  • Able to work one-on-one in a diverse environment.
  • Demonstrate organizational and study skills.
  • Working knowledge of technology and online platforms including Keyanomail, OneDrive, PDFs, Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom/MS Teams, Moodle, Self-Service and other software programs.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and welcome students and visitors; have them sign in.
  • Conduct needs assessments and connect students with tutors or resources.
  • Maintain tutor schedules and workshop dates.
  • Assist with online learning and navigate digital resources.
  • Support students with computer programs and digital resources.
  • Assist with basic computer skills like attachments, PDFs, and file sharing.
  • Assist with Centre printer/copier/scanner usage.
  • Teach essential study skills and refer to coaches as needed.
  • Identify student knowledge gaps and refer for targeted support.
  • Know and share Centre policies with students.

Student Assistant - Peer Tutor - Academic Success Centre
The Opportunity

Keyano College’s Academic Success Center is currently seeking a Peer Tutor (Student Employee) to help students with tutoring. Peer tutors are scheduled up to 9 hours per week, based on the operational needs of the Academic Success Centre. The term for this position is August 2026 – December 2026. Hours are scheduled between 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Peer tutors are valued members of the Academic Success Centre team at Keyano College. They work in a collaborative environment with the support of staff and fellow peer tutors to assist students of Keyano College. Peer tutors are current Keyano College students who have demonstrated success in the subjects that they tutor and who are willing to share what they have learned to empower other students to achieve similar success. Peer tutors also model and support the instruction of study skills and techniques. Peer tutors contribute to the success, progression, and retention of students in credit programs by offering both one-on-one and group tutoring sessions. They review and implement appropriate tutoring resources, while also modeling and encouraging effective learning strategies. The peer tutor program facilitates connections between students and their peers, who possess expertise in various courses or academic programs. These tutors have successfully completed the relevant coursework and are able to clearly explain course concepts, providing supportive and effective tutoring assistance. Peer tutors also assist with educational technology and will support students with computer programs such as Keyanomail, Moodle, Microsoft 365 (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams), textbook publisher platforms (e.g., TopHat, Pearson, McGraw-Hill), and other digital resources such as PDFs and eBooks. In addition, they will assist students with basic computer skills including file attachments (e.g., Emails, Moodle), document processing (e.g, PDFs, forms, and applications), file storage and sharing (e.g., OneDrive, File Manager).

Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Greet and welcome students and visitors as they enter the Centre, ensuring all students complete the Sign In form.
  • Conduct student needs assessments and connect students with the appropriate Peer Tutor, Academic Content Specialist or other resources or student academic services as needed.
  • Maintain schedule to ensure students know when tutors are available for a particular subject and when special workshops are being delivered.
  • Assist students with online learning and navigating digital resources, referring to the Library's Student Tech Support services or ITS as needed.
  • Assist with educational technology and will support students with computer programs such as Keyanomail, Moodle, Microsoft 365 (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams), textbook publisher platforms (e.g., TopHat, Pearson, McGraw-Hill), and other digital resources such as PDFs and eBooks.
  • Assist students with basic computer skills including file attachments (e.g., Emails, Moodle), document processing (e.g, PDFs, forms, and applications), file storage and sharing (e.g., OneDrive, File Manager).
  • Assist students with using the Centre printer/copier/scanner.
  • Assist students with essential study skills to help them learn the subject matter, referring to the Academic Success Coach or Academic Content Specialists as needed.
  • Assess student knowledge gaps (examples: grades on specific assignments or tests, moderating discussion posts, etc.), referring to the Academic Content Specialists as needed, in order to provide more targeted student support.
  • Be knowledgeable of student policies and share the knowledge with students utilizing the Centre.

  • Must be a registered Keyano College student and legally allowed to work on-campus.
  • Minimum one semester of post-secondary education completed.
  • B+ letter grade or higher in the course(s) that you wish to tutor.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex concepts.

  • Strong ethics and adherence to Keyano College policies (e.g., Academic integrity policy) to avoid over-tutoring and ensure that student work is the student’s own.
Compensation and Benefits

CUPE Student Rate - $20.43 per hour.
