Job summary

Keyano College in Fort McMurray, AB, seeks a Manager of Financial Reporting to lead the department’s annual financial statements, year-end processes, and external audits.   • Experience in budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and financial management.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including presentations.
  • Minimum three years in a supervisory role managing a team.
  • Knowledge of PSAS and Public Sector Accounting Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the preparation, review, and control of internal and external financial reporting, including annual consolidated financial statements and year-end processes.
  • Ensure compliance with PSAS and sector reporting requirements; liaise with government ministries and agencies.
  • Provide strategic leadership on accounting standards, internal controls, and financial policies.
  • Deliver budgeting, forecasting, treasury, and financial advisory services to assigned departments.
  • Lead financial systems improvements and automation initiatives with IT collaboration.
  • Lead workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, and staff development.
  • Maintain productive relationships with internal stakeholders, auditors, government agencies, and external partners.

Job description

Keyano Financial Services Department is currently seeking a Manager, Financial Reporting to join their dynamic team. Reporting to the Director, Financial Services, the Manager, Financial Reporting provides strategic leadership and expertise in financial reporting, accounting standards, internal controls, and financial compliance. The role oversees the preparation of the College's financial statements, coordinates year-end reporting, serves as a liaison with external auditors and the College's investment manager, oversees corporate and student accounts receivable, and leads cash planning and internal control activities. As a member of the Financial Services Client Services Leadership Team, the Manager provides budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and financial advisory support to assigned departments and divisions.

Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Partner with the Director, Financial Services and leadership team to develop and execute the department's vision, strategic priorities, and initiatives, supporting the College's mandate and achievement of Investment Management Agreement targets.
  • Establish departmental goals, performance measures, and service standards; monitor results, communicate expectations, and drive accountability for outcomes.
  • Direct the preparation, review, and control of internal and external financial reporting, including annual consolidated financial statements, year-end processes, and compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and sector reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with government ministries and agencies to ensure compliance with reporting requirements and sector-wide financial reporting standards.
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance on accounting standards, financial reporting, internal controls, financial policies, procedures, and business processes.
  • Deliver budgeting, forecasting, accounting, treasury, and financial advisory services to assigned departments and divisions as a member of the Financial Services Client Services Leadership Team.
  • Lead the review, evaluation, implementation, and continuous improvement of corporate financial systems, including business process automation initiatives in collaboration with Information Technology.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain departmental plans, policies, procedures, standards, and operational practices that support organizational objectives and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with applicable accounting standards, legislation, regulations, and requirements related to financial reporting, investments, treasury, and budgeting.
  • Prepare and present analysis, reports, recommendations, and briefing materials to the Director, senior leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Senior Accountant and budgeting and treasury functions, ensuring effective service delivery and operational excellence.
  • Lead workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, coaching, employee development, health and safety, labour relations, and collective agreement administration.
  • Foster a high-performing, inclusive, respectful, and customer-focused culture that promotes continuous improvement, learning, accountability, and service excellence.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with internal stakeholders, auditors, government agencies, post-secondary institutions, and external partners.
  • Champion effective communication and change management practices and represent Financial Services on committees, projects, and cross-functional initiatives as required.
  • Establish customer service standards, monitor stakeholder satisfaction, and implement improvements to ensure high-quality service delivery.
Qualifications

Required Qualification:

  • Professional accounting designation and
  • Minimum of a degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance or related discipline.
  • Minimum of five years progressive responsible experience with at least five years in a management position in a large, unionized organization, preferably in post-secondary education or public sector.
  • Experience in business management, planning, budgets and finance. Varied accounting experience and a well-rounded financial background is critical.
  • Minimum three years of experience in a supervisory role managing a team.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable legislation, regulations and procedures.
  • Complex accounting experience and a well-rounded financial background is critical.
  • Superior ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing, including delivery of presentations
  • Knowledge of legislation/regulations relating to financial reporting for Post-Secondary Institutions and Public Sector Accounting Standards
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with internal departments and external stakeholders
  • Proven acumen in business and financial management, with the ability to improve sectional effectiveness and efficiency through the management and utilization of human, financial and physical resources
  • Excellent project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem solving, organizational and decision-making skills
  • Strong leadership skills including the ability to direct, motivate, evaluate and recognize staff; proven ability to share skills and knowledge with others
  • Proficient in MS Office suite of software. Knowledge or experience with Great Plains, Caseware and FMW would be an asset
