Job summary

Keyano College in Fort McMurray, AB, seeks a Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Instructor to develop and deliver diploma curriculum, prep quality lessons, and conduct demonstrations in alignment with curriculum outlines.

The role reports to the Chair and requires on-campus work with relocation to Fort McMurray. Responsibilities include teaching theory, labs, and possibly clinical components, with evenings or weekends as needed.

Qualifications

  • Alberta Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician with interprovincial Red Seal
  • Minimum 5 years post-journeyperson experience
  • Instruction and mentoring experience is preferred
  • Strong communication, presentation and classroom management skills

Responsibilities

  • Develop/revise/update courses in consultation with the Chair, Program Coordinator, faculty and industry partners
  • Develop HET Diploma curriculum and conduct reviews
  • Assist with program development and committee work supporting the department and College
  • Create teaching materials for individual and group instruction and integrate technology where appropriate
  • Deliver regularly scheduled instruction with clear objectives and evaluation methods; provide tutoring and academic counseling as needed
  • Teach theory, lab, and possibly clinical components; evenings/weekends may be scheduled
  • Promote Keyano College and HET & Extended Studies Department in the community

Job description

The School of Trades and Technology is currently seeking a Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Instructor. Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate will be required to prepare and instruct quality lessons and conduct demonstrations as directed in curriculum and course outlines.

Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities

Core functions of the role:

  • Develop/revise/update courses, including consulting with the Chair, Program Coordinator, faculty, advisory committees, and potential employers and students.
  • Heavy Equipment Technician Diploma curriculum development and review
  • Engage in program development, assisting with the program coordinators, and participating in committee work in support of the department, division, or College.
  • Responsible for developing teaching materials for individualized and group instruction, and incorporate technology into the learning process, where applicable.
  • Carrying out regularly scheduled instruction, ensuring students awareness of course objectives, approach and evaluation techniques, as well as, recruitment, tutoring and academic counseling of students.
  • Teaching responsibilities may include theory, lab, and/or clinical. This may involve evenings and weekends on occasion which will be scheduled in advance.
  • Take the opportunity to participate in showcasing and promoting Keyano College and the HET & Extended Studies Department in the community.
Qualifications
  • Alberta Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification with interprovincial Red Seal certification
  • Minimum 5 years’ post-journeyperson experience
  • Instruction and mentoring experience will also be considered
  • Must be a self-starter with excellent interpersonal and motivation skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • A passion for student success
  • Strong communication, presentation, and classroom management skills
  • Commitment to fostering equity, diversity and inclusion in the learning environment
  • Willingness to engage in continuous professional development
  • Preference will be given to candidates possessing teaching experience at a post-secondary level, though we encourage candidates with related professional and or educational requirements to apply

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge in hydraulics, electrical, brakes, automatic, powershift and standard transmissions, air conditioning, and fuel injection
  • Knowledge of engine repair, experience with computer diagnostics.
  • Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Komatsu and CAT experience.
