Job summary

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is hiring a Structure Mechanic to perform maintenance and reconstruction on bridges, tunnels, and elevated guideways at our Davisville Yard. This role requires a Grade 12 with a technical program and hands-on grout/repair experience, and involves night shifts with 40 hours per week.

You will report to the Supervisor, Structure Maintenance, and must meet licensing requirements (G).

Qualifications

• Must have Grade 12 or recognized equivalent with technical program.
• Must understand verbal and written instructions and safety rules.
• Must have practical knowledge of grout, tunnel leak materials, and concrete/steel repairs.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, repair and reconstruction on bridges, tunnels, and elevated guideways.

• Ensure passenger and employee accessibility and safety in accordance with OHRC.

The work will normally be performed on night shifts with Thursday/Friday or Sunday/Monday as off days reporting from our Davisville Yard which may vary as directed by work assignments.

What You Will Do

Under the supervision of the Foreperson, Structure Maintenance, you will perform varied maintenance, repair and reconstruction work on bridge structures, tunnel structures, elevated guideways, retaining walls, slabs, etc.

Your duties will include:

• pressure injection grouting, external soil grouting, caulking and sealing of segmental tunnel liners, abrasive blast cleaning, concrete repairs, structural steel repairs, structural steel coating, steel reinforcement layout and placement, application of tunnel leak materials and the construction of leak control devices.
• The work may also involve the operation of trucks, forklifts and front-end loaders.
• You are required to treat passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensure the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within the area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service provider and an employer.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

• Require training normally obtained through the completion of Grade 12 education (technical program) or its recognized equivalent as determined by the Training and Development Department; Must be able to comprehend verbal and written instruction as demonstrated by an ability to understand and follow published operating/safety rules and regulations;
• Must be able to speak clearly in order to exchange information and instructions with the Control Centres and follow proper radio and telephone protocol;
• Must have practical experience and knowledge of injection grouting and external soil grouting, application of tunnel leak materials, construction of leak control devices, abrasive blast cleaning, structural steel repairs/coating, layout/placement of reinforcing steel, use of concrete materials and concrete repairs to bridges and tunnels;
• Must have a valid class "G" or better, Province of Ontario Driver's Licence;
• May be required to attend, as per department business needs, and successfully complete the class “DZ” driver’s licence training and pass the written and practical tests;
• Must be certifiable to wear breathing apparatus as per the respiratory protection program;
• Must attend and successfully complete the training and development department’s programs.
