Job summary

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is seeking a Senior Engineer, Noise and Vibration to lead measurement, analysis and mitigation for subway operations. This role reports to the Assistant Manager, Engineering Services and requires strong technical leadership in noise and vibration engineering within a transit context.

The incumbent will manage data collection, modelling, and public engagements, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and ensure compliance with relevant standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering with several years of engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (Ontario) registration required.
  • Noise and vibration experience, preferably in railway environments.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and implement systems for measurement, monitoring, and analyses of noise/vibrations from subway operations.
  • Lead noise and vibration initiatives including data collection, analysis, modelling, investigation and mitigation.
  • Represent Track & Structures in public meetings and update on technical initiatives and progress.
  • Provide technical expertise to identify root causes, develop cost-effective solutions, and support infrastructure design and maintenance decisions.

As a technical leader in noise and vibration management, you'll combine engineering analysis, field investigation, and stakeholder engagement to identify innovative solutions that improve transit operations and minimize impacts on surrounding communities.

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Assistant Manager – Engineering Services, the incumbent is responsible for the engineering and implementation of systems for the measurement, monitoring, and analyses of noise/vibrations emanating from subway operations; and reducing/eliminating the negative impact of noise/vibrations on the surrounding residential and commercial neighborhoods. Representing Track & Structures department in public meetings with various community groups and updating on the progress of technical initiatives for noise and vibration mitigation, as well evaluating the effectiveness of implemented solutions.

Leads and manages a broad range of subway noise and vibration engineering initiatives, including data collection, analysis, modelling, investigation, and mitigation. Provides technical expertise to identify root causes, develop cost-effective solutions, support infrastructure design and maintenance decisions, collaborate with stakeholders, ensure compliance with industry standards, and address community concerns through reporting, consultation, and public engagement.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
  • You have a University Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or higher, combined with several years of engineering work experience and some Noise and Vibration related engineering experience preferably in a railway environment;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario is required;
  • You have thorough knowledge of vibrations theory;
  • You have theoretical knowledge and practical experience of interface of wheel and rail, and track and rail vehicle design as applied to the science of track noise and vibrations;
  • Good knowledge of mechanisms of ground bourn vibrations, wheel and rail radiation, curving behaviour, creep forces, frictional excitation, vibration propagation from tunnels, wheel shape and damping;
  • You have theoretical knowledge and experience in implementing mitigation measures and track designs for vibration isolation;
  • You are familiar with construction related practices, codes, standards, regulations, and project management concepts involving several technical fields;
  • You have sound judgement; well-developed technical and analytical skills;
  • You have strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize competing assignments, collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams, and communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences;
  • You must have good presentation skills and affinity for public speaking and possesses excellent report writing and oral communication skills;
  • Proficiency in the use of a PC as well as related software applications relevant to the work performed;
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
