Job description

The Structural Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the fabrication, assembly, and installation of structural steel components on vessels under construction, repair, or refit. This role provides hands‑on leadership to structural trades while ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and production schedules. The Structural Supervisor works closely with Production Management, Engineering, Project Management, and other trade supervisors to ensure structural work is properly sequenced and integrated with mechanical, electrical, and outfitting scopes. The ideal candidate brings strong steel‑shop experience, solid welding knowledge, and proven supervisory capability in marine or heavy industrial environments.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise day‑to‑day structural steel fabrication, fitting, and installation activities in accordance with approved drawings and work packages.
  • Review engineering drawings (digital or printed), nesting plans, and work instructions; translate design intent into clear, practical direction for crews.
  • Act as a hands‑on working supervisor, leading by example while coordinating structural crews, equipment, and materials.
  • Coordinate with other trade supervisors to manage shared work areas, sequencing, access, and interdependencies across disciplines.
  • Promote and enforce all Health & Safety policies and procedures; lead toolbox talks, participate in incident investigations, and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor progress against schedule, identify risks or delays, and proactively propose solutions to Production Management.
  • Oversee and support welding, fitting, cutting, and forming operations, ensuring workmanship meets quality, class, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with short‑term planning including manpower allocation, equipment needs, material readiness, and daily/weekly work planning.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance management for employees; participate in employee development, interviews, and progressive discipline as required.
  • Maintain required documentation related to completed work, safety, manpower, and production activities.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and QA/QC to resolve drawing issues, field changes, and quality concerns.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to meet project deadlines and support broader yard operations as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support ship construction and repair operations.
Requirements
  • Strong commitment to safety with demonstrated experience enforcing safe work practices.
  • High school diploma required; college‑level technologist education or trades training preferred.
  • Minimum 7+ years of hands‑on structural steel fabrication or fitting experience, preferably in a marine shipbuilding or ship repair environment or, alternatively, in heavy industrial fabrication.
  • Minimum 3+ years of supervisory experience leading steel or structural trades.
  • Strong welding knowledge is essential, including practical understanding of SMAW, FCAW, cutting, forming, and fitting processes.
  • CWB and/or Red Seal certification is preferred but not required; demonstrated competency and experience are prioritized.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, nesting plans, and CAD‑based documentation.
  • Strong leadership, communication, planning, and organizational skills.
