Job Summary

The Trade Supervisor, Steel (Afternoon Shift) is responsible for leading their team of tradespeople by coordinating and overseeing completion of trade activities within the Shipyard. The General Supervisor, Steel will ensure that projects are completed efficiently, safely and in compliance with all regulations and company standards. The position reports directly to an Area Manager and requires significant interaction with Trade Management.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

Schedule
  • Afternoon: 3:30 pm – 11:30 pm (Monday - Friday).
What You’ll Do
  • Assume accountability for safety, cost, schedule and quality performance in area of responsibility.
  • Implement and carry out Seaspan's health, safety, environmental and quality processes on the shop floor and strive to eliminate safety hazards at every opportunity.
  • Responsible for delivering product and customer quality standards.
  • Lead team with schedule and priorities, assigning work to trade employees with the skill and ability to efficiently complete scheduled work.
  • Follow and implement the collective agreement and standard methodologies to lead trades employees efficiently.
  • Responsible for discipline, including performance and attendance management and directing chargehands effectively.
  • Partner with the Workforce Development Team to ensure trade employees have the skills, equipment, training and certifications required to perform planned work activities.
  • Collaborate with management to establish daily and weekly goals and hold employees accountable for performance; report internally on work process and status to Area Managers.
  • Raise technical trade issues and implement solutions as identified.
  • Promote a work environment that is respectful and harassment‑free.
  • Work closely with Trade Managers, HSE, Quality, Human Resources and the Employee Relations teams as required.
What You’ll Bring
  • Red Seal Welder (preferred) or Metal Fabricator; multi‑ticketed is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of related trades work experience outside of trades apprenticeship or educational program.
  • A minimum of an additional 3 years of previous supervisory experience in a heavy industrial environment, preferably unionized.
  • Dedication to safety and quality, with experience in the application of behavioural based safety.
  • Proficient knowledge of trade responsibilities specific to heavy manufacturing/shipbuilding (welding, metal fabrication, electrical, pipefitting, paint/sandblasting, mechanical, rigging, etc.).
  • Strong written, verbal and electronic communication skills.
  • Time management and organization skills with a proven dedication to follow‑up and follow-through.
  • Ability to empower others, lead change, have difficult conversations and coordinate discipline when required.
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills to resolve disagreements quickly and successfully, bringing a problem‑solving demeanor to conflicting approaches and priorities.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate with others towards a shared goal.
  • Appreciation and understanding of the value of diversity within a team.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products and web‑based applications.

The estimated salary for this position is $112,500–$137,500 plus a shift premium for the afternoon shift. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.

Location & Security

This position may involve defense articles and/or technical data regulated by ITAR and the U.S. Arms Export Control Act. In compliance with ITAR, the successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance through the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and the Defense Production Act. The successful candidate will be required to maintain their security clearance throughout employment in this position.
