Ontario Shipyards is seeking a Welder-Fitter to join our team in Hamilton. You will fabricate, assemble, and weld structural metal components for vessel construction and repair, interpreting blueprints and applying various welding methods.

Responsibilities include maintaining safety, performing tool inspections, reading drawings, and ensuring quality through accurate work records. Prior ship repair experience is an asset; Red Seal and CWB certifications are valued assets as well.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of hands-on fitting/welding experience in construction or maintenance.
  • CWB certification is required.
  • Red Seal is an asset.
  • Strong safety mindset and ability to read engineering drawings.

Ontario Shipyards is looking for Welder-Fitters to join our team!

Job Summary:

As a Welder-Fitter, you will fabricate, assemble, and weld structural metal components for vessel construction and repair. Your responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, measuring, cutting, shaping, and fitting metal parts while ensuring compliance with industry standards. You will operate specialized tools, select appropriate welding methods, and inspect work for accuracy and quality.

KeyResponsibilities/Duties:
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines for operational safety.
  • Conduct pre-use inspections of tools and equipment to ensure they are in safe working condition.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials, plan work sequences, and optimize metal cutting and welding efficiency.
  • Construct patterns and templates, lay out reference points, and mark heavy metal components according to specifications.
  • Cut, shape, fit, and assemble structural metal components using various welding and fabrication techniques.
  • Rig, hoist, and transport materials within the worksite, ensuring proper handling and storage.
  • Proficiency in working with various metal-cutting and welding processes and techniques.
  • Operate heavy-duty metalworking machines, including brake presses, shears, cutting torches, grinders, drills, and CNC equipment, to cut, bend, punch, and shape metal components.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, to support quality control and project documentation.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to meet deadlines, proactively identifying and addressing potential delays while proposing solutions to management.
  • Collaborate and assist colleagues with daily operational needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested to support operations.
Requirements:
  • Strong commitment to safety and strict adherence to safety protocols.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Preferred).
  • Possess 2+ years of hands-on fitting/welding experience in construction or maintenance settings.
  • A CWB certification is required.
  • Previous experience in ship repair is considered an asset.
  • SMAW all-position certification is preferred.
  • Experience in FCAW, and GMAW processes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with layout tools is considered an asset.
  • Understanding crane signals and terminology is considered an asset.
  • A valid Red Seal Trade Certification 437A or 456A is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Must have adequate physical fitness to fulfill demanding tasks with a willingness to work in various weather conditions year-round.
