Job summary

Marqeta is seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to independently drive the design and delivery of complex banking and money movement software. You will own multi-component systems, set technical direction, and partner with product and design to deliver high-impact solutions from architecture to production.

This role can be remote within Canada (Ontario or British Columbia) and involves mentoring engineers, leading critical initiatives, and shaping the technical roadmap for scalable,

Qualifications

• 8+ years in backend engineering with system design/architecture experience.
• 3+ years in payments/FinTech or related domain.
• Proven track record leading technical projects and teams.
• Deep expertise in Java, Python, web services, microservices, distributed systems.
• Experience with large-scale, high-performance, reliable systems.
• Ability to decompose complex problems into scalable solutions.
• Experience creating technical roadmaps and leading delivery.
• Excellent communication for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Strong focus on quality, deadlines, and accountability.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and architecture of large-scale systems and components.
• Own major technical initiatives and align with customer needs and business goals.
• Drive scalability, performance, and maintainability improvements.
• Mentor engineers and foster growth across the team.
• Collaborate with product, design and other engineering teams on priorities.
• Develop deep product understanding to align engineering with goals.
• Independently drive high-impact features with minimal supervision.
• Champion best practices and drive architectural evolution.
• Advocate for software craftsmanship and clean code.
