Job summary

Affim is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Trust and Safety) to drive technical strategy for foundational systems in a remote Canada role. You will lead complex, high-impact initiatives across systems and stakeholders, ensuring reliability, scalability, and strong ownership across the team.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes.
• Experience delivering major features, system components or deprecating existing functionality with a clear technical plan.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and understand architecture from low-level details to large systems.
• Proven ability to gather and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global team.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks.
• Define and advocate technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own the team’s operations and availability with monitoring, playbooks, and on-call readiness.
• Set code review and design standards and promote them beyond the team.
• Mentor and develop teammates through feedback and leadership by example.
