Affirm is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to lead and shape the technical strategy for a distributed, high-availability system stack. You will collaborate across product, design, and analytics to ensure robust, scalable solutions that support rapid growth in a regulated financial domain.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes.
• Experience in financial systems, ledgering, treasury or adjacent domains where data accuracy and system reliability are critical.
• Experience delivering major features or components in a system with a clear technical/execution plan and high-quality code.
• Thrives in ambiguity, capable of scaling from low-level language idioms to large system architecture understanding.
• Growth trajectory showing ability to gather and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with a global engineering team.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long horizon and align it with business-impacting projects.
• Collaborate across product, design, and analytics to ensure sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are understood.
• Act as a force-multiplier by defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own team operations and availability with monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, testing, and on-call readiness.
• Foster a culture of quality by setting and promoting code review and design standards.
• Mentor and develop talent through feedback and leading by example.
