Job Description

Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Summary
Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, the successful candidate will act as the primary interface between Design Engineering and Manufacturing; essentially you will be the "Go To" person and will coordinate all product design changes for the products built at the assembly plant.

Performance Expectations
  1. Prepare concept, and design and production drawings with supporting calculations and material data ensuring that designs meet specification requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
  2. Design, formulate and produce complete product related changes for current products in a continuous improvement environment. Improve warranty, ease of assembly, and expand product options for production.
  3. Investigate and resolve bill of material (BOM) issues.
  4. Maintain thorough documentation for all aspects of assigned projects.
  5. Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and make recommendations for improvement.
  6. Work with manufacturing and engineering teams to provide cost effective solutions to design challenges.
  7. Provide support in checking details, assemblies and BOMs for assigned projects.
  8. Mentor junior and intermediate Design Engineers.
  9. Apply a wide variety of established or modified engineering methods or techniques with considerable independence of action.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
Credentials
  1. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or C.E.T. in a Mechanical or Electrical discipline.
  2. Preference will be given to candidates registered or working towards their P.Eng designation.
Desired Characteristics
  1. Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Mechanical / Electrical designer in a heavy equipment (or related) manufacturing environment.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of Mechanical design, GD&T, DFMEA, welding/fabrication processes.
  3. Design experience with SolidWorks (with formal training preferred); experience with FEA desirable.
  4. Good working knowledge of mechanical design, GD&T, DFMEA, welding / fabrication processes, hydraulic controls and general electrical skills.
  5. Excellent communication skills with the ability to work well with a cross functional technical team as well as with manufacturing personnel.
  6. Strong organizational and leadership skills.
