Job summary

Suncor in Calgary seeks a Senior Accounting Analyst to join the Controllers team within the Supply, Trading & Optimization (ST&O) group. You will provide accounting expertise to Environmental Commodities and support month-end activities, journal entries, and financial reporting.

The role requires a CPA/CMA/CGA/CA or equivalent and a Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance, with strong Power BI, Excel, and SAP experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance or related field with 7+ years of experience in energy/commodities/trading sectors
  • CPA, CMA, CGA or CA designation
  • Proficiency in Power BI, Excel and Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

  • Act as a key finance partner for Environmental Commodities within ST&O; understand business value drivers and provide insights for decisions
  • Develop expertise in provincial and federal emission programs and related accounting/financial reporting implications
  • Support month-end processes including journal entries, analyses, reconciliations, and reporting for 3rd party, intercompany, and balance sheet positions
  • Collaborate with Accounting Policy to ensure proper accounting treatment for evolving activities
  • Partner with Finance, Trading, Operations and Compliance to drive process improvements, controls, and financial analysis

Are you a finance or accounting professional with experience in the energy, commodities or trading industries and a passion for supporting commercial operations? We are seeking a Senior Accounting Analyst to join our dynamic Controllers team, supporting the Supply, Trading & Optimization (ST&O) team. In this role, you will provide accounting expertise to our Environmental Commodities group, which plays a critical role in managing Suncor’s regularly evolving renewable fuel obligations and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction requirements. Working at the intersection of accounting, trading and sustainability, you will help support supply and optimization activities that maximize operational and commercial opportunities while advancing Suncor’s environmental objectives.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, with 7+ years of related experience, preferably within the energy, commodities, or trading sectors.
  • A financial designation (CPA, CMA, CGA, CA) with a solid understanding of financial and accounting principles
  • Proficiency in Power BI, Excel and other Microsoft Office programs
  • Working knowledge of SAP S4, SAP Fiori, with Triple Point (TPT) knowledge being an asset
  • Proven analytical skills and a continuous improvement mindset with the ability to communicate complex information into meaningful insights
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a key finance partner for Environmental Commodities team in ST&O: understand key business value drivers and performance metrics, and providing insights that support business decisions
  • Develop expertise in provincial and federal emission programs and their associated accounting and financial reporting implications
  • Support the team with executing the Emission Accounting month end cycle, including preparing journal entries, month end analysis and reconciliations, reporting on 3rd Party, intercompany, and balance sheet and expense positions
  • Collaborate closely with the Accounting Policy team to ensure appropriate accounting treatment is applied for evolving business activities
  • Partner with stakeholders across Finance, Trading, Operations, and Compliance to identify and implement process improvements, enhance controls, system improvements, and financial analysis and business insights
Location and other Key Details:
  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150- 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
