POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Speech and Language Pathologist position is suited for a compassionate, creative, innovative problem‑solver who works comfortably with both culture‑based and western services. As part of the FASD Multidisciplinary Team, the Speech and Language Pathologist will be a front‑line position with the primary responsibility to conduct language assessment for FASD according to evidence‑based best practice standards, primarily with a pediatric population aged 18 years and younger, and with adults as needed.

The successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of speech and language services with a focus on supporting children and families to improve their child’s developmental trajectory including assessment, report writing, the development of integrative recommendations and strategies in collaboration with the FASD Multidisciplinary Team and the child’s key stakeholders, brief intervention, referral to local resources and ongoing support through consultation.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of one (1) year experience with a pediatric population conducting formal SLP assessment preferred. New graduates will be considered and provided supervision. Experience working with First Nations, Inuit and Metis (FNIM) people in community‑based settings and fluency in a traditional language is an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in Speech‑Language Pathology.
• New graduates will be provided supervision.
• Registration with College of Audiologists and Speech and Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO).
• Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professionals Act and the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.
• Certified Individual Authoriser – Assistive Devices Program – or eligible to obtain.
• CanFASD Multidisciplinary Team Training Certificate – or eligible to obtain.
• Experience working with children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as FASD, ASD, developmental delays, ADHD and intellectual disability.
• Knowledge of FNIM Culture, Values, and History.
• Experience working within culturally appropriate service models for Indigenous people.
• Awareness of Health and Wellness issues pertaining to FNIM People.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
• Proficiency providing care on virtual platforms (Ontario Telehealth Network).
• Ability to communicate and work effectively on a multidisciplinary team.
• Knowledge of and experience with speech and language assessment techniques, therapeutic skills, modalities and their applications.
• Knowledge of community care requirements and resources available.
• Professional, responsive, and positive work attitude is essential.
• High level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning, and discretion.
• Able to design intervention and group social skills programs to population served.
• Advocates for clients as warranted, and facilitates connections between clients and community supports, to assist clients in accessing required resources.
• Uses sound professional judgment and acts in accordance with all SKHC policies and procedures and standards of practice set forth by CASLPO.
• Maintains professional competence and knowledge of current practices by participating in professional development and clinical supervision.
• Works as a member of an inter‑professional/multi‑disciplinary team in collaboration with community partners for the purpose of consolidating and coordinating client treatment.
• Follows established governing body regulations and guidelines under CASLPO.
• Demonstrated strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and multitask efficiently.
• Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people of various cultural, age, and economic backgrounds.
• Ability to communicate information effectively through a variety of means including meetings, reports, letters and presentations.
• Valid Ontario driver’s license and use of own vehicle for SKHC business.

CONTRACT

This is a full‑time (35 hours/week) permanent position. Some travel is required to provide mobile FASD clinic services.
