Do you want to help make the world better for queer and trans folks through social media?

Xtra Magazine, an award-winning digital magazine covering culture and politics through an LGBTQ2S+ lens, is hiring a contract Social Video Producer to level up our presence on short-form video platforms including TikTok and YouTube Shorts. We are looking for a nimble collaborator with a passion for all things video and LGBTQ2S+ issues, along with a proven track record of producing high-impact social video content.

This is a part-time freelance position, reporting to the Senior Editor, Audience Engagement with further supervision from Xtra’s Managing Editor.

What will you do?

• Work closely with our Senior Editor, Audience Engagement to produce quick turn-around social video content covering LGBTQ2S+ news, culture and analysis as aligned with Xtra’s editorial mandate
• Pitch, write, edit and promote social video content on TikTok, YouTube and Xtra’s website
• Keep up with emerging trends in short-form social video and platforms
• Collaborate with the larger Xtra editorial team on multimedia content opportunities

Who are you?

The ideal candidate for this role has:

• A proven track record of producing high-impact social video content
• Deep familiarity with TikTok and YouTube Shorts, as well as video editing software like CapCut
• A willingness to learn and adapt
• A sense of urgency and ability to work quickly and accurately and respond to the news cycle
• Comfort working remotely and collaborating remotely within a small team
• Strong attention to detail and news judgement
• Strong familiarity with LGBTQ2S+ issues in Canada and the U.S.
• On-camera experience/comfort welcome but not required—this is primarily a “behind the camera” role
• A background in journalism, journalistic ethics and best practices preferred but not required—just a willingness to learn!
• Experience with audio editing or podcast production is an asset

This is a part-time freelance position, working three days a week at $35 CAD/hr for a total of no more than 21 hrs/week. The work can be done remotely from anywhere in Canada or the U.S., with availability to work during Pacific Time ideal but not mandatory.
