Job description

CHEK News has been on air since 1956 and is Vancouver Island's most-watched newscast. As North America’s only employee-owned, independent television station, CHEK is operated by the people who bring you the news every day. For nearly 70 years, we've been dedicated to telling the stories that matter most to our community. Our company is made up of people who care deeply about Vancouver Island and the communities we serve.

Role Overview

CHEK News is looking for a Social Media Producer to join our award-winning newsroom in a new role focused on growing and strengthening our presence on social media. This person will own our day-to-day social media strategy and will oversee content posting across all social media platforms. Working alongside our digital news team and others in our newsroom, their mandate will be to grow our social media following, increase engagement, promote our stories and company, and ensure our daily content reaches a growing audience online.

Who We’re Looking For?

We’re looking for someone who doesn’t just understand social media but loves it. Someone who can take a broadcast news story and turn it into a compelling, share-worthy piece of content built for a social media audience. CHEK News has no shortage of news content, but what we need is someone who can take our material and rework it for an audience getting their news off social media. You should be comfortable on camera, hard-working, and a self-starter who’s motivated by results. We want someone who gets a thrill out of watching a post take off, who’s in tune with social media tricks and trends, and who has a good instinct for what works on social media. You’re also a team player who brings energy to our newsroom and is excited to help shape what comes next for TV news.

Key Responsibilities
  • Edit and repurpose broadcast news footage and raw content into content tailored for social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok
  • Drive engagement across all CHEK’s social media platforms
  • Post and schedule social media content throughout the day
  • Monitor daily news coverage and breaking news for social platforms
  • Write captions/headlines
  • Stay on top of platform trends, formats, and best practices, and bring fresh ideas to the team
  • Appear on camera presenting stories and providing behind-the-scenes coverage, promos, and story explainers
  • Promote and amplify staff, reporters, and their stories across social channels
  • Collaborate with reporters, producers, and the newsroom team to identify story angles that will resonate on social media
  • Respond to and engage with audience comments and messages to build community
  • Help develop and execute strategies to grow followers and audience reach across all platforms
  • Oversee the visual layout and branding of our social media pages, ensuring a consistent, professional look that reflects best practices across platforms
  • Track performance metrics
Qualifications and Experience
  • Journalism experience or education is an asset, but the most important skill is knowing how to use social media effectively and creatively
  • Valid driver’s licence and clean driving record. Must be able to drive a company vehicle independently.
  • The ability to work with speed and accuracy in a fast-paced team-oriented environment and the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude are essential.
  • Strong working knowledge of video and graphics editing tools like Canva, CapCut or Opus
  • Familiarity with multiple social media platforms and best practices
  • A knack for making compelling content quickly and efficiently
  • A large personal following is not required. What matters is that you understand what makes content perform, and can apply that knowledge to CHEK's platforms
What We Offer
  • This is a full-time unionized position in Group 2 as per CHEK’s Collective Agreement
  • Full-time CHEK employees are expected to participate in the employee share ownership program after one year of employment.
  • Schedule will be primarily Monday-Friday shifts, but some evenings and weekends may be required as needed
  • This position is based primarily on site at CHEK's Media Centre in Victoria. Some work-from-home flexibility may be available and can be discussed with the News Director.
  • Full extended health care benefits
