CBC News has an exciting opportunity for a collaborative team player with strong editorial judgment, a good understanding of news audience needs, and a knowledge of digital publishing and evolving media platforms. We’re hiring a Producer of Client Relations to join our Video Distribution team. The role is to ensure our best-of visual journalism is reaching the widest available audience possible at home and around the world.

Under the guidance of the Executive Producer, you’ll be overseeing key parts of our daily video inventory as part of our end-to-end distribution of visual content across multiple clients, formats, devices and platforms. You’ll be identifying the strongest visuals to share with our external publishing partners, including the European Broadcasting Union, CBS, NBC, CNN and other key clients using our content. You’ll answer requests from partners and provide outlooks so they can see what’s coming. You’ll work alongside others managing video across CBC News digital properties as we create one cohesive team managing our video together. That includes teams curating video for our news app and web, FAST channels, CBC linear channels, as well as third-party platforms such as YouTube and Tik Tok.

You’re a collaborator, who builds strong relationships with teams across CBC News and with our publishing partners. In this role, organization, communication, reliability and flexibility are key. You are able to pivot quickly to turn breaking news into on-demand video and update as the story evolves.

You ensure that content meets the high quality and editorial standards our partners expect from CBC News.

An experienced journalist, you’re comfortable making independent editorial decisions in accordance with CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices. You have experience using audience research and performance data to guide your editorial decisions, constantly looking for the story that moves audiences beyond discoverability and into actively engaging with and sharing CBC News video.

This position requires you to be on-site at a CBC facility. It’s a Monday-Friday work week. The scheduled hours will be determined based on production needs to support a 24/7 video distribution service. With clients around the world, the hours will likely include early mornings, late evenings and some overtime.

Core Responsibilities
  • Publish relevant CBC News video to our internal tool, MediaBeach, for pickup by external media clients in Europe, USA and Canada.
  • Act as a daily liaison and maintain relationships with counterparts across CBC News and with media clients.
  • Handle requests for raw and packaged content from external clients.
  • Verify and clear usage rights for distributing and publishing video content online.
  • Perform Quality Control checks on raw tape and packaged items, including.
  • Check, identify and flag any rights issues with tape.
  • Check, identify and flag any technical issues.
  • Check, identify and flag issues with supers and on-screen graphics.
  • Check to ensure correct MetaData.
  • Coordinate with CBC News Resources teams for making live feeds available to partners.
  • Coordinate with other Video Distribution teams to make packaged video available to partners.
  • Coordinate with local regions identifying best-of Canadian content for international audiences.
  • Populate and maintain outlooks identifying priority video content, creating a menu of available video for clients to choose from.
  • Some publishing work may be required, including writing / vetting titles, thumbnails, descriptions and writing host intros.
  • Cut, transcode and distribute segments from CBC News Network, CBC’s live and breaking 24/7 news channel.
  • Guide, coach and support colleagues on best-of-practices and through change as required.
  • Ensure that CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the audiences we serve.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum five years recent experience working in a news environment, at least two with video.
  • Experience writing, editing, packaging digital content in a compelling way, including thumbnails, supers and graphics.
  • Experience with content management systems such as 9CMS, Media Central, iNews, including ability to edit and publish within those platforms.
  • Experience using production programming tools, such as Avid, iNews, to search line-ups and build outlooks.
  • Knowledge of digital video platforms, including streaming platforms such as YouTube and Roku.
  • An ability to write, understand and leverage metadata.
  • Basic understanding of performance metrics and audience data to support editorial decisions.
  • Ability to manage fast-moving information and ensure material is distributed appropriately.
  • A self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment.
  • Proven ability to coordinate across multiple teams in a collaborative and respectful manner and mediate disputes as they develop.
  • Excellent journalistic skills.
  • Understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Understanding of how business rights affect news content, legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Interest and openness to build towards a long-term vision of streaming at CBC News.
  • Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.
  • University degree or equivalent experience.
