Education

A secondary school diploma or employer‑approved alternatives (see Note 1). The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience. And possession of a valid Canadian Certificate of Competency as a Second‑class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship) or higher. Candidates will be asked to provide proof of education and/or proof of Canadian certificate of competency. Candidates with foreign education credentials must provide proof of Canadian equivalency. Experience

Five years of experience in marine design, construction, repair, operation, inspection, quality assurance or other marine related areas or in technical or operational management of ships or marine related electrical engineering/technology or as master or chief mate or second or third‑class engineer on ships of 150 gross tonnage or more.

• Experience as a port captain or as an independent surveyor or as a surveyor for classification societies, Protection and Indemnity Clubs (P&I Clubs).
• Experience in design, construction or repair of commercial vessels or serially produced small vessels.
• Experience in managing large technical projects.
• Experience as a marine superintendent of a vessel.
