Job summary

ABC Recycling Ltd. in Burnaby, BC, is seeking a Shear Operator to run a mid-sized excavator with a mobile shear attachment, thumb and bucket tools. You will sort, process and load scrap material to meet customer specs and operate primarily on-site with opportunities for overtime.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years of experience with heavy equipment, practical knowledge of bucket and thumb usage, and a safety-focused approach. We value reliability, teamwork and a long-term commitment.

Qualifications

• 2+ years experience operating excavators, material handlers or other heavy equipment.
• Experience with bucket and thumb attachments is a plus.
• Mechanical aptitude with good hand-eye coordination.
• Safety conscious attitude and adherence to procedures.
• Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Flexibility with shifts and occasional travel.

Responsibilities

• Sorts and processes materials to customer specifications with bucket, thumb and shear attachments.
• Loads/unloads materials to/from bins, trailers, rail cars.
• Assess risks and mitigate safety and environmental concerns.
• Perform routine maintenance like lubrication and blade alignment.
• Participate in process design and improvements.
• Support in developing solutions to operations challenges.
• Adopt industry best practices and continuous improvement.
• Self-manage when operating off-site.

Position Overview

ABC Recycling is seeking a Shear Operator to operate equipment and the mobile shear-attached machine along with thumb and bucket attachments. This role is primarily based out of Burnaby, BC. The job holder will be responsible for safe operation of a mid-sized excavator with a mobile shear attachment, sorting, and processing scrap metal to specifications. This is a full time, year-round job opportunity with many opportunities for increased earnings through overtime. The ideal candidate is attentive, flexible, and wanting a long-term career.

Responsibilities

• Sorts and processes materials to customer specifications using various attachments such as the bucket and thumb and Labounty shear.
• Loads and unloads materials from and into various bins, dumps, trailers, and rail cars.
• Assesses situational risks and mitigates safety and environmental concerns.
• Performs minor maintenance tasks such as lubrication, blade alignment and tensioning.
• Participates in the development and design of processes.
• Assists in the analysis of process improvements and development of solutions.
• Gains awareness of and contributes to implementing industry best practices.
• Self-manages when operating off site.

Qualifications

• 2+ years experience operating different types of excavators, material handlers, and other heavy equipment such as wheel loaders.
• Must have previous work experience using bucket and thumb.
• Prior experience with scrap metal recycling, operating a shear attachment or demolition would be a definite asset.
• Mechanical aptitude coupled with strong hand/eye coordination.
• Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Safety conscious.
• Flexibility with work shifts and ability to travel occasionally.
