Summary/Overview

The Senior Safety Specialist is responsible for leading day-to-day safety programs and driving a strong safety culture at Plum Gas Solutions' manufacturing facility in Drayton Valley, Alberta. This role owns the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of health and safety programs across the shop floor and site, ensuring compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, WCB-Alberta requirements, and Plum's internal EHS Safety Management System.

This individual will work closely with manufacturing, engineering, and operations leadership to embed safety into daily work, support the facility's requirements for pressure equipment and process piping, and lead incident investigation, hazard assessment, and training activities. The Senior Safety Specialist should be comfortable spending the majority of their time on the shop floor, partnering directly with welders, pipefitters, machine operators, and other production staff.

This role reports to the VP of Operations and plays a key part in supporting the site's Certificate of Recognition (COR) program and broader safety leadership as Plum's Canadian operations continue to grow.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Lead and coordinate day-to-day health and safety programs across the Drayton Valley manufacturing facility, including the shop floor, warehouse, and yard operations.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, WCB-Alberta requirements, and other applicable federal and provincial regulations.
  • Conduct regular hazard assessments, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and safety audits across manufacturing processes, including welding, pipefitting, machining, and material handling.
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action tracking through to closure.
  • Develop, deliver, and continuously improve safety training and orientation programs for new hires and existing employees (e.g., lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, PPE, forklift/powered mobile equipment, WHMIS).
  • Maintain, update, and administer the site's Health & Safety Program documentation and support the facility's Certificate of Recognition (COR) audit and renewal process.
  • Track, analyze, and report safety KPIs (e.g., TRIR, LTIR, near-miss trends, corrective action status) to site and Plum leadership.
  • Lead or actively participate in safety committee meetings, toolbox talks, and emergency response drills.
  • Partner with the Director of Manufacturing to identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen safety culture and reduce risk.
  • Participate and ensure daily testing for QAQC procedures are followed within the manufacturing facility
  • Support workers' compensation claims management (WCB-Alberta) and coordinate modified duty/return-to-work plans in partnership with HR.
  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready safety records and documentation in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Stay current on evolving Alberta OHS regulations, industry best practices, and manufacturing safety standards, recommending program updates as needed.
Required Education and Experience
  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years of progressive safety experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or oil & gas environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, and WCB-Alberta processes.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting incident investigations, hazard assessments, and safety audits.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and training/facilitation skills, with the ability to influence safety behaviors on the shop floor.
  • Comfortable working in and regularly present on a manufacturing shop floor environment.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, or actively working toward certification.
  • Direct experience leading or supporting a Certificate of Recognition (COR) program and audit process.
  • Experience in welding, fabrication, or pressure equipment manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with safety management software/EHS reporting tools.
Leader Responsibilities
  • Acts as a key safety resource and coach for manufacturing supervisors and shop floor leads, reinforcing accountability for safety performance at all levels.
  • This role is based on-site at Plum Gas Solutions' manufacturing facility in Drayton Valley, Alberta.
  • The role regularly interfaces with shop floor, warehouse, yard, and office environments, and requires a strong, visible presence on the manufacturing floor.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, crouch, reach, and climb for extended periods.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times on the shop floor.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow, as needed for yard or outdoor site activities.
