As part of CanmetMATERIALS’ Corrosion Technical Team in Hamilton, ON, the Senior Research Technologist works closely with research scientists, engineers and technologists to set-up, conduct and optimize laboratory experiments to simulate or explore the behaviour of materials exposed to hydrogen-containing environments. The Senior Research Technologist also supports research activities involving high-pressure high-temperature environments relevant to clean energy production, critical mineral processing and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).
The Senior Research Technologist will be responsible for the operation of CMAT’s high-pressure hydrogen test cell for fatigue and fracture toughness testing of materials in hydrogen service. These assessments involve adopting available industry standards and developing improved test methods for material qualifications in pressurized hydrogen environments. They will participate in the installation and commissioning of the equipment, and they will be responsible for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the test cell and supporting infrastructure. They will play a significant role in the development and implementation of procedures for sample preparation, handling, best practices and a quality management system for hydrogen testing. The Senior Research Technologist is responsible for collecting, processing and ensuring the quality of the scientific data produced in their experimental work, all while observing the highest standards of occupational health and safety.
The Senior Research Technologist position requires the incumbent to work onsite at the Hamilton laboratory full-time.

Positions to be filled:1
Education
ED1: Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree with a specialization related to materials science or engineering, mechanical engineering or a relevant technical science, from an accredited post-secondary institution.
Experience
EX1: Experience in mechanical testing including experimental design, equipment set-up, basic programming using standard machine commands, calibration, instrumentation and monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance.
EX2: Experience with a range of mechanical testing methods, procedures and techniques.
EX3: Experience in compiling, storing, analysing, validating and documenting data from experiments.
EX4: Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory environment.
Asset Qualifications:
AE1: Experience with control software programming, for example, Python or LabVIEW.
AE2: Experience with fractography of materials.
AE3: Experience with high temperature or high pressure equipment.
AE4: Experience working with flammable and toxic gases.
Knowledge
K1: Knowledge of the principles and practices of conducting experiments in a materials science laboratory.
K2: Knowledge of the standards and practices of mechanical testing methods.
K3: Knowledge of mechanical properties of materials.
K4: Knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
Abilities
A1: Ability to provide informed guidance on the experimental approach to be used, as well as on technical and operational parameters of work related to mechanical testing of metals.
A2: Ability to operate complex technical/scientific equipment and particularly mechanical testing equipment.
A3: Ability to assess the quality of experimental data.
A4: Ability to organize work and establish priorities to meet deadlines.

Operational Requirements:
1. Willing and able to work on site in a laboratory environment 5-days a week.
2. Willing and able to work overtime as required and to adopt flexible work hours as per operational requirements.
3. Willing and able to wear a supplied-air breathing apparatus (SABA or SCBA), which requires maintaining a clean-shaven condition in the areas of the face where the seal is made.
4. Willing and able to wear personal protective equipment including but not limited to safety glasses, CSA certified safety footwear, hearing protection, breathing apparatus.
Reliability Status security clearance
Willing and able to work with hazardous chemicals and gases in accordance with appropriate safety protocols.
