Job summary

The Calgary Board of Education seeks a Senior Project Manager to lead cross-functional service transformation initiatives. You will partner with leaders, understand business needs, facilitate discovery, and deliver practical solutions that improve services and organizational capability.

You will work in a flexible hybrid model, with up to three remote days and at least two days in the office, across a 12-month calendar. 1.0 FTE, salary listed as SP1.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, project management, operations management, or related field.
  • PMP certification is required.
  • Change management certification (e.g., Prosci/CCMP) is an asset.

What does this role look like?

The CBE understands the future of work is flexible. In this role, you are eligible to participate in a flexible work program that allows you to work remotely for up to three days a week. A minimum of two days must be in the office. At certain times, you maybe be required to work in the office more then 2 days per week based on operational requirements.

What will you do?
Purpose

The Senior Project Manager leads and supports cross-functional service transformation initiatives that advance organizational priorities across the Calgary Board of Education. The role partners with leaders across the organization to understand business needs, facilitate discovery, lead projects, and deliver practical solutions that improve services, strengthen organizational capability, and support sustainable change.

Success in this role requires curiosity, adaptability, strong analytical thinking, and the ability to quickly understand new business environments, build relationships, and bring diverse interest holders together to achieve shared outcomes.

Accountability
  • Lead the successful delivery of complex, cross-functional service transformation initiatives that align with organizational priorities and achieve intended outcomes.
  • Build trusted partnerships with leaders and interest holders to understand business needs, facilitate collaboration, and support informed decision-making.
  • Apply project management practices to define scope, manage schedules, risks, resources, and deliverables, and ensure projects are delivered effectively.
  • Apply business analysis practices to understand challenges, evaluate opportunities, and develop practical recommendations that improve services, processes, and organizational capability.
  • Establish and maintain effective project governance, communication, and reporting to support transparency, accountability, and executive decision-making.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Service Transformation practices, tools, and standards while promoting consistent project delivery across the organization.
Major responsibilities
Project Delivery
  • Lead the planning, execution, monitoring, and closure of complex cross-functional service transformation initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain project charters, work plans, communication plans, schedules, budgets, risk registers, and other project management deliverables.
  • Monitor project performance, proactively manage risks, issues, dependencies, and changes.
  • Prepare project status reports, executive briefings, and governance materials.
  • Build trusted relationships with sponsors, leaders, project teams, and interest holders to support collaboration and successful project delivery.
  • Facilitate project meetings, workshops, and governance sessions that build alignment, resolve issues, and support decision-making.
  • Coordinate and support procurement activities, including RFP development, evaluation processes, vendor selection, and implementation planning, in partnership with business areas and Procurement.
  • Support transition to operations and the realization of intended business outcomes.
Business Analysis
  • Facilitate or support discovery workshops, current-state assessments, and collaborative planning sessions to understand business needs and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Gather, analyze, document, and validate business, functional, and technical requirements.
  • Develop process maps, user journeys, current- and future-state processes, and high-level system interaction and integration diagrams to support solution design and implementation.
  • Develop or contribute to business cases, implementation approaches, impact assessments, and other decision-support materials.
  • Collaborate with business areas to define solution approaches, implementation plans, and transition activities that support successful adoption.
Change Management
  • Assess organizational impacts and support implementation planning and readiness activities.
  • Partner with sponsors and interest holders to support adoption of new processes, services, and ways of working.
  • Support communications, training, and transition activities to enable successful implementation.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Service Transformation methodologies, templates, tools, and practices.
  • Capture lessons learned and promote knowledge sharing to strengthen organizational capability.
  • Identify opportunities to improve organizational processes, project delivery, and service outcomes.
What are we looking for?
Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, project management, operations management, or a related discipline (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent required.
  • Change management certification such as Prosci, CCMP, or equivalent is an asset.
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience leading complex, cross-functional projects and organizational initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success delivering projects through the full project lifecycle, from initiation and planning through implementation, transition, and closure.
  • Proven ability to facilitate workshops, gather business requirements, develop process maps, and analyze business processes.
  • Demonstrated experience developing business cases, project charters, governance materials, and executive-level reports and presentations.
  • Knowledge of organizational change management principles and experience supporting implementation planning, readiness, and operational transition.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and work effectively with senior leaders, cross-functional teams, and diverse interest holders.
  • Experience working within a complex public sector environment, including governance, procurement, and unionized workplaces, is considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of project management, business analysis, and organizational change management principles and best practices.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically and develop practical solutions to complex business challenges.
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, presentation, negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with executive leaders and diverse interest holders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships, influence without formal authority, and achieve consensus among diverse interest holders.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while managing competing priorities and delivering results.
  • Strong financial acumen, including experience developing and monitoring project budgets.
  • Knowledge of public sector governance, procurement practices, and vendor management principles.
  • Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar business areas and adapt to changing organizational priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Teams, SharePoint, Planner, Visio, and other Microsoft collaboration and productivity tools.
