Qualifications

We are looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our team. GVA Lighting Product Designers are talented Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineers who create designs for new lighting fixtures, build models and prototypes and improve existing products.

In your capacity as Senior Product Designer, you will work as part of a cross-functional team to develop new products and support an existing portfolio. You will play a critical role in the New Product Development (NPD) and Product Customization Order (PCO) processes; designing, prototyping, testing and launching lighting and lighting adjacent products.

Here's what you will do:

  • Taking ownership of assigned product design throughout the NPD process, from concept to manufacture, ensuring proper release of documentation and adhering to product release schedules.
  • Considering factors influencing product design such as cost, selection of materials, production methods, new technology, safety, fashion trends, ergonomics and the environment.
  • Producing and modifying 3D models, detailed drawings, final specifications including Bill of Materials and costing by using dedicated computer software (SolidWorks, ERP).
  • Assisting to create and maintain configurator roadmaps of the products and coordinate entry into the ERP system.
  • Designing, modeling and testing optical systems.
  • Making sample and/or working models by hand or using computerized prototyping equipment.
  • Testing design concepts by computerized modelling (thermal & stress analysis etc.) and/or physical hands-on testing of prototypes.
  • Working with suppliers to research, quote, and prototype new parts, processes and materials. Occasionally traveling to off-site facilities to do so.
  • Participating in Engineering and Manufacturing design reviews to evaluate design concepts.
  • Implementing Product Customization Orders (PCOs) and Engineering Changes (ECs), ensuring on time completion of activities.
  • Supervise design work of junior designers, fostering a collaborative and innovative design culture within the team.
  • Working with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to investigate and resolve issues with existing designs.
  • Refining existing product portfolio through a process of continuous improvement.
  • Staying up to date with emerging design tools, software, and trends to enhance design capabilities and efficiency.
  • Supporting Product Lead and/or Marketing by conducting technical market research.
  • Assisting Marketing Department in the creation of marketing materials (e.g., specification sheets, installation guides etc.).
  • Reporting for SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) and IRAP (Industrial research Assistance Program) programs and;

This is a multi-disciplined role. Candidates must be tenacious, organized, accurate and a have a strong commitment to producing high quality professional work.

Skills and experience that qualify you for the role:

  • 5+ years of related experience - Product Design in a manufacturing environment preferred;
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Electronics Design or related field;
  • Excellent knowledge of SolidWorks with a minimum of 3 year working experience;
  • Ability to read and create 2D and 3D drawings (SolidWorks a must);
  • Knowledge and experience with PDM standard or professional (Enterprise);
  • Experience with new product introduction (NPI) and design for manufacturing (DFM);
  • Some knowledge of electronic and/or LED systems preferred (optics, LEDs, form function);
  • Experience with the following processes is an asset: Aluminum casting and extrusion, polymeric injection molding and extrusion, CNC machining and sheet metal forming;
  • Creativity! You love creating new things and solving problems.
