Job summary

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) seeks a Senior Policy Analyst, Justice, to research, analyze, and advise on priorities including policing, community safety, restorative justice, and legal reform. The role supports national advocacy and First Nations-led justice policies and frameworks.

Based in Ottawa with possible travel, this one-year full-time term may extend. Responsibilities include data synthesis, policy development, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration with First Nations

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree in political science, public policy, law, criminology, Indigenous studies or related justice-sector field.
• Minimum 5+ years’ experience in conducting research, analyzing information and policy in First Nations communities.
• Experience writing proposals and reports, leading discussions, and synthesizing information into policy positions and documents.
• Experience developing intergovernmental partnerships including CIRNA and ISC.
• Must have in-depth knowledge of First Nations justice issues and strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Gather and analyze complex justice-sector data and write reports on findings.
• Develop First Nations-led justice policies by interpreting relevant data and engaging with stakeholders.
• Make recommendations on policy, programs, and procedures affecting First Nations.
• Maintain datasets and information repositories; participate in sector work plans.
• Contribute to strategic planning and respond to information requests with updates.
• Draft and edit briefing notes, speaking notes, and leadership correspondence.
• Build networks with First Nations communities regionally and nationally.
• Plan, support, and lead meetings and consultations with internal and external parties.
• Provide project management and technical support for sector projects and procurement.
• Other duties as assigned.
