Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Principal Protection and Control Engineer to lead the Protection & Control team in Canada, providing technical leadership across utility and renewable energy clients. You will work on projects from 12 kV to 500 kV, guiding design through commissioning and supporting FATs/SATs.

The role emphasizes ownership, mentoring, and critical system-level problem solving, with opportunities to influence safety by design and project execution strategies.

Qualifications

• 20+ years of utility-focused protection, control, and metering engineering experience with system-level responsibility.
• Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, or eligible to obtain (U.S. PE considered an asset).
• Expertise in substation protection philosophy for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and feeders.

Responsibilities

• Act as the Protection & Control SME across multiple projects and programs.
• Set, uphold, and improve protection, control, and metering standards for HV substations.
• Lead as Principal Engineer or Technical Authority on complex projects and provide final technical approval.
• Review protection planning docs, one-lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Oversee coordination studies and relay settings for transmission systems and validate outputs.
• Chair design reviews, risk assessments, FATs/SATs, and commissioning strategy discussions.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of P&C standards and tools.
